What is cold air intake?

A cold air intake does just what it says, it helps provide colder, denser air to the intake systems of the engine through a larger diameter filter and smoother, more flow optimized piping. The factory OE air box isn’t designed with max performance in mind, not maximizing the flow of air to the engine.

What is general maintenance?

Not commonly thought of as a “mod”, general maintenance items are actually a great starting point for you on your quest to improve and modify your GTI. Upping the general maintenance items for your Mk6 or Mk7 GTI help ensure your GTI performs the best it can for the duration of your ownership and beyond.

Does IE use catless?

IE does not condone the use of "catless" or"test pipe" setups that remove the catalytic converter (s) completely. A quality high-flow catalytic converter will perform in line with a catless setup without the smell and increased carbon emissions associated with test pipe designs.

What is a cat back exhaust?

A Cat-back exhaust (also known as axle-back) replaces the rear section of the GTI factory exhaust system after the catalytic converter. These bolt-up to the factory exhaust after the catalytic converter, replacing the heavy and restrictive stock muffler with a better flowing muffler. Cat-backs improve the sound of your GTI and may add a small amount of horsepower. Because it retains the stock portion of the down pipe and catalytic converter, the horsepower gains aren’t as high as they could be with a Turbo-back exhaust.

Intake

It’s an age-old question and one we’ve previously answered: should I spend money on a cold air intake? The answer, in short, is yes, but there is a caveat. If you’re just looking to spend money, then you could arguably get more bang for your buck making your MK4 GTI perfect rather than just dumping money at a single upgrade.

Downpipe

Again, one single upgrade isn’t going to turn your MK4 GTI into a different car. The idea is to have a plan and know the steps to reach that goal. Upgrading your downpipe and exhaust with a higher-flowing, better performing, and less restrictive system is going to allow you to have room to grow.

K04 Turbocharger

The factory K03 turbocharger is anything but impressive. It becomes a serious restriction point if you need something to support more than about 215hp, as that’s all it can handle. The bigger K04 turbocharger offers more air delivery and supports a higher horsepower ceiling.

Software Tune

There used to be off-the-shelf solutions for the basic upgrades mentioned so far on the list, but with recent EPA crackdowns, many have been pulled. The APR Stage 2+ software was the go-to upgrade for years, but those are no longer available.

Ignition System

With more horsepower and boost from the upgraded K04, intake, downpipe, and exhaust, you’ll want to make sure your ignition spark stays consistent under those heavier loads. To prevent misfires under high boost, a popular retrofit is the beefier 2.0T ignition system. Not much to it here, just more future-proofing.

Intercooler

Last on the list of actual engine performance upgrades is a bigger and more capable front mount intercooler. The intercooler sits between the turbocharger’s compressor (cold side) and the throttle body. Air that is compressed becomes hotter, thanks to all that molecular friction, and therefore resists density.

Short Shift Kit

It’s not going to give you any more power or make your MK4 GTI any faster, but one of the first upgrades we always suggest is an adjustable short shift kit. We produce one of the only options on the market that allows you to tailor the feeling and shift throws to your liking for the best possible driving experience.

Is general maintenance a mod?

General maintenance is not seen or thought of as a ‘mod’, but with that being said, general maintenance items are actually a great starting point for your quest to improve and modify your GTI. Once you have put about 20,000 miles on your car, it is a good idea to put in better spark plugs.

Ignition Coils & Spark Plugs

Before we get started with this mod guide, let’s talk a second to talk about ignition coils and spark plugs. We highly recommend changing all of your spark plugs and all of your ignition coils to ensure you get the full sense of performance out of your engine and mods.

1. MK5 GTI Aftermarket ECU Tune

A tune will almost always be the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to performance mods. The tune that comes out of the factory has much more conservative settings because not everybody buys a GTI to be aggressive believe it or not. Engine performance is one of the many reasons why we suggest a tune, but certainly not the only reason.

2. Aftermarket Downpipes

An aftermarket downpipe, often referred to as DP, is an important part to upgrade if you are going for real power. It connects the turbo to the exhaust system. To ensure the MK5 GTI’s are compliant with emissions, they come standard with two catalytic converters.

3. Aftermarket Intercoolers

A mod that never gains a lot of attention is intercoolers. Yes, it may not be a purely performance mod, but it is an efficiency and reliability mod that allows a lot more power compared to the stock unit.

4. Aftermarket Intakes

Now, these last 2 mods are always argued as a waste of money, but we’ll dive into them now and give our opinions. Air intakes should not be bought strictly for power output. However, compared to OEM intakes, aftermarket intakes bring in a lot more air. The more air the engine pulls in; the more power the engine kicks out.

5. Aftermarket Exhaust

Like the intake, an aftermarket exhaust doesn’t provide much power gains, but it will provide an aggressive sound that we all strive for. Sound aside, an aftermarket exhaust does reduce backpressure because typically the diameter is a little bigger and less restrictive.
