5. RED, WHITE AND BLUE

Arrival

As we pulled into the facility, we were immediately greeted by security who confirmed our reservation with the name of the club member we knew, and slowly drove down a short winding road that overlooked a parking lot below.

The Range

On a crisp early morning, our caddies stood behind us on the empty range as we emptied a few practice Titleist Pro V1 balls by our feet to warm up. After a few pokes, we tested out the greens which I would love to play a game of billiards on – yes they were still in amazing shape after a horrible Northeast winter.

The Course and My Round

It was a discouraging start, as the first two holes were used to snap the jitters that took control over me at the start. I knew I wasn’t playing for any prizes but in my mind I felt as if I was on TOUR that day and was easily convinced this track would chew me up.

Conclusion

I highly recommend any golf fan out there to go to a PGA TOUR event during either the practice round and/or the actual tournament. Walk the course among all the great players, grab some autographs and take loads of photos of everything around you.

Tournaments hosted

Liberty National hosted The Northern Trust (formerly The Barclays and the Westchester Classic), in 2009, 2013, and 2019, and will host for the fourth time in 2021. In 2009, Heath Slocum won with a score of 275 (–9), one stroke ahead of four runners-up. In August 2013, Australian Adam Scott won by one stroke over four runners-up.

Caven Point controversy

Caven Point is a 22-acre (8.9 ha) bird sanctuary in Liberty State Park along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway adjacent to the golf course. The owners of the course would like to lease the land to expand the course with additional holes. The proposal would require privatization of publicly-owned land and disruption of the fragile ecosystem.
