What Is Smart Golf?

Those of you who have read all my instructional posts (Hi, Mom!) may be wondering, “Does this guy have multiple personalities? One day he’s telling me to leave my driver in the garage, the next day he’s saying it’s the most important club in the bag and that I should hit it on every single hole !”

Great Execution Make You Look Smart

Ask any coach and they’ll tell you that their intelligence, as perceived by fans, is directly related to the quality of their players. If a football coach goes for it on fourth down and succeeds, he’s a smart, bold leader. If the result is turning the ball over on downs, he’s an incompetent boob who should have been fired yesterday.

Know Yourself

To make good decisions, you need to know your game. You need to understand the cold, hard facts of your shot patterns, distances, dispersions, and tendencies. This is a lot harder than it sounds.

Put Your Knowledge to Work

Having information about yardages and shot patterns is only useful if you can put it to work for yourself. The first step is having the information accessible . You can make a notecard with your yardages or put a label on each club. Maybe you want an index card you tuck into your scorecard holder.

Conclusion

So what’s the smart play when you have 175 yards into the green with water on the right? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. For short-hitting slicers, laying up might be the best decision. Laying up might also be the right play for the bomber whose 8I tends to leak.

What is the best thing you can do from a course management perspective?

One of the best things you can do from a course management perspective is to play your game independently of what others in your group are doing.

Can you hit your driver on a narrow fairway?

If you are facing a narrow fairway but the course has minimal rough and there are no hazards on the hole, hitting your driver may still be the right option. But when water or out-of-bounds is present, playing it safe with a shorter club is a smart plan.

Is it too early to start playing smarter golf?

Some golfers seem to think that they are not good enough to worry about course management – that’s just not true! Even if you still have a lot of work left to do on your swing technique, it’s never too early to start playing smarter golf.

2. One or the other

I know your pain, Gary. My last two rounds of 2021 featured one where I couldn’t keep the ball on the planet but made every putt, followed by a round where I hit 15 greens and made none of the putts.

4. Ladies league

That’s great! My only advice (and this goes for every golfer out there) is to brush up on your etiquette. Nothing too fancy, but just the basics: Don’t walk in the line of people’s putt, be ready to hit when it’s your turn, mind your shadow, and don’t complain about how you’re playing (or lose your temper).

5. Head down?

Keeping your head down is now regarded by most teachers as pretty bad advice. Instead, think about keeping your chest down, they say but always turning. On the backswing, you should feel like you’re turning into your trail hip, then turn freely through. Think less about keeping your head down, and more about keeping your torso turning.

6. Losing balance

It could be a physical limitation. You could, like me and most other golfers who sit at a desk all day, have poor hip mobility. Specific exercises will help with that.

7. Too late

That sounds like a ‘you issue,’ Luke. But it does underline an important point to any junior golfers out there, or parents of junior golfers who may be reading this: Get the boring fundamentals — grip, stance, posture, alignment — correct early, and save your junior a lifetime of having to unlearn bad habits.

8. Adjusting clubs

If you make clear to your clubfitter that you don’t want to replace your entire set, most times they’ll be able to adjust your current set of clubs, depending on the material they’re made from.

9. Zombie draw

Your club needs to be moving from in-to-out (out to right field for right handed golfers), and the clubface needs to be pointing left of that.

An Important Note on Playing Smart Golf

Image
Before we start with our list of tips, we need to highlight an important note regarding course management strategy. Some golfers seem to think that they are not good enough to worry about course management – that’s just not true! Even if you still have a lot of work left to do on your swing technique, it’s never too early t…

Don’T Assume Driver

  • One of the classic course management mistakes made by amateur players is assuming that every par four or par five hole will need to be started with a driver. Sure, you’ll hit driver on most of these holes, but it’s probably not called for on all of them. Clubbing down to a fairway wood, hybrid, or long iron can help you keep the ball in play and position yourself for a better approach shot. To d…

Read The Slope – on Every Shot

  • You already know that it’s important to read the slope of the ground when getting ready to hit a putt. After all, that slope is going to determine which way the ball is going to turn as it rolls. But did you know that you should be reading slopes on every other shot during your round as well? The importance of this point comes down to the desire to...

Each Hole Is A New Challenge

  • Too many golfers let one hole bleed into the next from a course management perspective. For instance, if you bogey one hole, you might be tempted to play the next hole more aggressively, in an attempt to ‘make up’ for that bogey. In reality, however, you can’t make up for a bogey – it’s already done and there’s nothing you can do about it. The best thing you can do is play the next …

Ignore The Flag

  • Okay – so we aren’t actually suggesting that you ignore the flag on all of your approach shots, as that is not likely to be beneficial. If you hit a great drive and only have 80-yards to the hole, you should probably aim your wedge right at the flag and try to make a birdie (in most cases). However, for the average golfer, there comes a point where the approach shot is long enough to …

Play Your Game

  • This might be the most important tip in the article. One of the best things you can do from a course management perspective is to play your game independently of what others in your group are doing. Everyone else going for the green on a short par four? That’s fine – but it doesn’t mean you have to. Other players aiming for the flag on a long par three over water? Again, they are fre…
