Lie tape or sole tape goes on the sole. The former shows where you're hitting it on the face, the latter where you're soling out and indicates potential lie adjustments. If you're checking for lie, you are correct. Heel hits are too upright (need to go flatter), toe hits are too flat (need to go upright).

The mark on the lie tape is on the toe side of the head. The mark also indicates that the golfer is closing the face at impact. The information tells the fitter that the lie was too flat for the golfer and if the swing was perfect, the ball will drift to the right.May 4, 2015

In other words, applying lead tape to the heel promotes a draw shot shape.

Lead tape can be applied in a multitude of ways to a golf club, and its function is to increase the swing weight of the club, as a 1-inch strip of lead tape typically weighs about 1 gram. Finishing up the fine tuning of my AP2's on a lie board and the 4-7 are hook machines. The wedges seem perfect ball flight. I was always under the impression that the AP2's have too much bounce and may go 1 degree strong but not sure what to make of the lie angles. I noted the heavier impact on the tape and you can clearly see the heel strikes.

High Plains Driver

If you want to do it right, bend each iron according to the lie tape reading on each, and then hit from the turf and tweak a little from there if necessary.

Hondabuff

Wow, Thanks guys. I was reading that I would probably need to go flatter of a lie in the 4-7 due to the heel striking first. I'm definitely going to print out the labels and test that method.

Hondabuff

So I was able to print out the labels and hit some balls with my 6 and 7 irons. The vertical line is maybe 1/2 degree up at the most. Its a nice high ball flight with maybe a 3-5 yard draw. I was also hitting off the lie board to verify the strike marks on the sole and they were mostly in the middle.

EXMAX

wet the turf first , then hit approx 10 to 20 shots without cleaning everything off the club face and look at the dirt line

Hondabuff

I sure hope you not hitting on a range that is real sandy. Great way to ruin the finish on your irons. After doing it I think the face labels and lie tape are the best when you can see the ball flight.

Hondabuff

While I'm talking about fitting the irons properly I noticed my strike patters on the irons where closer to the heel of the face vs. the toe. The sharpie line throughout the set indicates I need to bend the irons 1 degree flatter from what they are currently playing. My 7 iron plays exactly 37" to the butt of the club and swing weights at a D3.
