I have refinished a part of my driver once. Just sanded it with real fine grit sandpaper, made sure it was dustfree and used Motip metallic black car paint. I think i sprayed 4 coats in a dustfree cabinet. I was very much surprised by the result, came out great.

If you want to paint the head yourself - treat it identically to an auto body or motorcycle finish and you will be just fine.

I repainted my G2...carefully masked w/ blue tape and several coats of black spray. Once dry, several sessions with an automotive wax and it ended up looking pretty decent. It got rid of the skymarks and that annoying half moon alignment aid.

No paint that comes complete in a can is anywhere near as durable as two-part, catalyst-activated automotive paint (i.e. the stuff that actually comes on cars). Happilly, you do not have to have a full-on airless spray rig with automotive gun/tip to use the two-part.

If you want that glassy look then the best way to accomplish this is dipping the head in Polyurethane after painting it. At least that's what the "how to" document Golfsmith sent me recommends. It does make the head look 100 times better in my opinion but it can be a real PITA if you're going to paint the head gloss black.
