Chrome plating has been eatin away. You will need to clean them a lot to keep them from rusting, could do some oil on them. The thing you really have to worry about now is the grooves face wearing down.

I use Purple Power wheel cleaner on my irons. If it's safe for automotive chrome, it's safe for golf club chrome.
