I heat up with a heat gun and use a knife to cut them off. As long as you are careful and don't try to use the tip of the knife you won't have any problems with scratching the paint or hurting the shaft in any way.

I do the same as you do except use a heatgun rather than a torch and prefer pliers with a 1/4" or 3/8" jaw to needle-nose - grabs more of the ferrule. A knife works too of course, but I nicked a hosel once by being in a hurry and still feel embarassed about it...

I use an electric jug (kettle) to boil water. I rotate the ferule (club head) around the spout when're the steam is coming out. This will generally soften the ferule/epoxy so I can slide the ferule away from the head. Then I use the shaft puller. I need to move the ferule at least an inch or more to use the shaft puller.

Read a tip years ago where you boil head and ferrule. Take a small piece of grip and wrap around ferrule. Unwrap that grip piece and it loosens the ferrule. You can then move up the shaft. Put some foil around the ferrule and heat head as normal.
