Step 2: Vinegar, Steel Wool & Sandpaper
To get started I put enough white vinegar in my bucket to just cover the head of the club and splashed it up over the rest of the shaft using my hand, I probably could have used a cloth but this worked fine! It was a bit messy though, so I definitely suggest doing this outside (particularly if your significant other is opposed to the house smelling like vinegar!)..
Step 3: Cleaning the Face of the Club
It looked as though these clubs had been put away dirty, and I definitely wanted to make sure that I got into all the groves on the face of the club. This is where the toothbrush comes in handy, just dip it in the vinegar and brush away!
Step 4: Before & After
It took around an hour of scrubbing the entire set to get to this point, and personally I think they look great.
Step 5: Don't Forget the Handle!
While I was at it I thought I'd give the handle a good scrub too and for this I swapped out the vinegar for a mixture of warm water with a bit of dish washing liquid, a bit of a scrub with the toothbrush and they were as good as new!
Step 6: Rinse & Dry
At this point all of the clubs had been scrubbed with vinegar and soapy water, I wanted to ensure that there was no residue of either hanging about, so I gave them all a good hose and hand dried each club thoroughly.
Step 7: Polish & Buff
Having a tool like a Dremel will make this step a lot easier, but it's not really necessary - I hand polished each of the shafts using an all purpose metal polish and a ran, and used the Dremel with a buffer bit on the heads of each club.\

I've been reading a bit on the internet of how to rust a wedge and most articles I've read just say to soak the wedges in Coke (I don't know for how long though). Sadly all I have is about 10 cans of Diet Coke, and I don't like Diet Coke so I'd want to use that.

I got a Vokey Oil Can SM4 about 2 months ago and am just letting it happen naturally. The first time I used it the gold coating came off of the sole pretty quickly and I'm just now noticing a little rust on the face and hosel. I've heard wrapping it in a wet towel works but have never tried it.

The Coke is to remove the rust, and the oil can finish. After that the wedge will be raw steel and will develop rust naturally. You can accelerate the rusting process by soaking the head in salty water. May look some what blotchy though at first.

Here is the best technique I have found and is literally a rust patina in a spray bottle, real easy and no harsh chemicals: [list=1]#N#[*]Soak in the diet coke for 1 hour to remove previous finish#N#[*]With a spray bottle, spray club head with white vinegar and allow to dry, repeat as many times as it takes to do the the whole club head - This is very important and will allow for better adherence of rust - you are literally "pickling" the steel#N#[*]Mix - 16oz hydrogen peroxide, 2oz white vinegar, and 1/2 Tbsp of salt in a spray bottle#N#[*]Spray and watch the rust appear, allow to dry and then repeat for desired effect#N#[/list].

Rusting a wedge is not to make the ball spin more. Rust actually makes the feel of the club much softer

It'll come off with use. I have 2 oil can wedges that were rusty as heck when I bought them, but you could still see the mill marks. After a few shots they shined right up. The part that contacts the turf/sand/ball is shiny and the rest is a nice brown color.

No matter what you do the rust will come back. If there is rust that means that there is basically a hole in the plating finish on the club, and no matter what you do (short of refinishing it) rust will come back.

that was my 2nd grade sci project. Salt and vinegar solution, the salt for abrasiveness. Works very well with rust, but yes, vinegar will take your paint layer off too.
