After years of heat and on-course use, the grip itself may be degraded. For what started out as grip + tape with glue likely has become one mass. If the " tape is fused to the inside" it may be more hassle than it's worth to salvage the grip.

After a couple of minutes drain the solvent and push the grip over the all thread as if you are installing the grip on a shaft.

I've seen grips where the tape stuck so tight inside the grip that dynamite wouldn't take it off. Fill the grip with solvent and let it sit and soften the tape, and the grip swells up in size. Bottom line, some minor tape residue can be removed through various means, but if the tape is stuck tight, throw the grip in the trash.
