Higher Engine Revs and Your Engine (Benefit)

Horsepower is equal to torque times rpm, divided by a constant (5252.) Simply put, rpm is a function of power.

What Exactly is RPM?

Rpm is a common term and stands for revolutions per minute. When it comes to cars, it measures how many complete revolutions your crankshaft makes measured in one minute.

How Do I Increase Low Idle Revs?

To make your engine rev higher due to low idling, troubleshoot for causes, reset the PCM (powertrain control module) and follow your particular car’s unique relearn procedure.

Why is My Idle Revs Low?

If your vehicle has an electronic throttle, you will have to check your ECU for Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Conclusion

Often people are so enamored of supercars that they attempt to raise their revs to imitate their idols. Unfortunately, without increasing the capacity of your engine to cope with raised rpm, you may be doing more harm than good.

Hi i've got a problem with a rev counter not working the thing works sometimes when you give it slap on the dash but secounds later nothing? I checked the square connection on the back seems ok.

simonmk2 Forum Member

my clocks have white dials so i cant see wot type the are the clocks from the other golf do say motometer?

The rev counter signal comes from a red/black wire to the coil. I would probably check this for breaks for even just cut it near the plug and replace it.

does that red/blk wire come from the connection at the bottom of the clocks because i thought the rev counter worked using that square connection on the back with the small screwa? wots that for?

The rev counter get's its signal through the wire via the plug. The cable which goes into the back of the clocks is the speedo cable.

Alright il check the earths soon, if no luck there Il get the stalk from GSF.

oakgreener Forum Member

I would think it's most certainly the stalk. BTW, you can fit an upgrade kit for the headlights that involve fitting relays fed directly from the battery. This will give you much better headlights as it eliminates the volt drop, and also takes the full load from the stalk switch as they only operate the relays. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

What basically happens with the control stalk is that it switches a power feed from the main lightswitch to either the dipped filaments or the main ones, but not both together. If the wire colours are the same in a mk.3, the common feed ('56') is White-black (AIR), with Yellow for the dipped side (56b) and White for the main (56a)

Yes thats what I wanted to get originally but they were 90 for one at the time, strange how the price has now dropped to 70ish. Alright Il have a look at that! Thank you very much
