To set the air/fuel mixture screw you need to have a warm engine. while the engine is at idle, you want to increase the idle by about 100-200 rpms (which isn't much). Now... while counting turns SLOWLY turn the screw in by 1/2 turn increments and allow 3 or 4 seconds in between for the engine to stabilize as best it can.

depress brake pedal, if the revs drop, it is too rich, lean it out till you can press the brakes without affecting the revs, then reset idle at the throttle body!!!!

Post

tis blindingly obviouse really as the brake servo takes air from the inlet manifold, i met a random bloke well into his 60s who was ex british leyland, i tried it and it worked!!

Post

Nice tip! I know a little method you can use for determining if your car's running lean or rich, at any revs, but its not as good as that one. You wire up a switch and +12V to the 5th injector and if the revs increase when you add a little squirt o fuel, you were lean; if the revs drop, you're rich.

Post

it passed its mot a few weeks back on this set up, and on the r/r with gas analyser was 1/8 of a turn lean!

Post

Messing about with this is potentially going to screw up your engine in a big way. If nothing else at least pop out your plugs frmo time to time and check to see what's going on but this really isn't a very scientific approach

Post

of course it depends on your engine not havin false air, i sort of assumed that, as any amount can cause no end of problems.

Post

You aren't actually looking at fuelling in any way nor the emissions. Therefore if you alter your mixture to run lean you can cause detonation i.e. serious problem

They're wired in parallel. Board to boot first then it splits off into lift/main. The latter follows the flow pipe underneath. You can check the lift pump flow rate its 300cc in 10 seconds.

Did this ever get solved? Have exactly the same issue, started years ago, never solved and car put into storage. But would be nice to get the old girl out.

although i had 12v in lift pump at back it wasnt making much noise, can any one help find a suitable replacement of pump for 1988 golf 16v? ebay or else where?

Matthew Walker New Member

I have a similar problem to MackieGTI. I have a 91 plate GTI 16v and last weekend it died on me like it ran out of fuel (It hadn’t thought).

Connect 12volt + and - directly from the battery to the high pressure fuel pump terminals. If it doesn't run, then a new pump would be a sensible first thing to try.
