First there are two types of timing to set 1. Cam timing 2. Ignition timing As the top of your engine rotates (the camshaft, valves etc), the bottom half of the engine is also turning (rods, pistons, crank etc). There are several jobs on your car that you need to set the engine at Top Dead Center or TDC

This article will show you how to set TDC for the head by using the crank and timing belt. The crank and head are connected by the timing belt. If you are replacing the timing belt you will be removing the timing belt cover as well as the motor mount to set both the crank and head at TDC separately.

Post

Hopefully this is a definitive guide to setting up your timing from scratch on your Golf. First there are two types of timing to set

Post

Step 1 - We are going to begin with the cam timing so you would only need to go through this stage if you've got reason to doubt the car is set up correctly (if not, simply skip to ignition timing way down at step 67).

Post

Step 4 - Remove any wiring to the alternator (this could be just a connector or some bolted on wires depending on the model) then remove the alternator from the car.

Post

Step 8 - If you look down towards the crank pulley you should see a timing mark on the lower case. Mine had been 'enhanced' by someone previously but there's an arrow just beneath the scratches you can see in the picture.

Post

Step 9 - Fit a socket onto the crankshaft pulley bolt (21mm IIRC) as shown in the first picture, then rotate the pulley until the line on the pulley matches the arrow from step 8 as shown in picture 2. The line can be seen running across the pulley either side of where the belt sits as shown in the third picture

Post

Step 13 - Note the mark in the distributor body which is shown at the 12 o' clock position here. the rotor arm should point at this line when the engine is at TDC with cylinder #1 on the compression stroke. You'll notice that mine was nowhere near, the rotor arm was about 45 degrees out

Post

Step 16 - The distributor should now completely slide out from the engine.

Volkswagen recommends changing your timing belt every 100,000 miles

The timing belt connects the engines crankshaft with the camshaft. While there are very specific procedures you need to perform to eliminate the possibility of damaging the engine it is still a DIY project if you take your time and pay attention to the details.

Project Photos

Figure 1 While it is possible to replace the timing belt without removing all the lines (red arrows) on the top of the engine I did so I could getPictures. I would recommend removing the lines to give you more room to work and a chance to see what you are doing.

Tips

A novice should buy, at considerable expense, the manufacturer's shop manual for the specific model vehicle and engine which is to have the belt changed. These manuals are written for professional mechanics, assume some degree of mechanical expertise, are very detailed in that they state belt tensioner values, bolt torques, fastener locations, etc.
