This is a common policy at most courses. The reason is pace of play. It would waste a lot of time having to share clubs. Other than on the tee, any time you both had to use the same club (like if you were approximately the same distance from the green) you'd have to wait for the other person to hit, then wait for them to bring the club over to you.

Yeah. We'll see. I might just have to go by myself. My problem is that in all the people I hang out with or see on a regular basis, I'm the only one with a golf set, so I can't really go with any of them with this rule. My uncle who lives a half hour away has a set, but I don't think we're gonna make that trip just for the set.

You could always ask if they will make an exception - especially during an off peak time. I was once paired with a father and son that shared a set (8am on a saturday) They didnt slow us down, but they also knew when to pick up or drop with the other on a hole.
