What is the takeaway in golf?

Simply put, the takeaway is the beginning of the golf swing. References to the takeaway generally mean the first couple of feet of the swing as the club head moves back from the ball.

What is a one piece takeaway?

A one piece takeaway is one in which the hands, arms, and shoulders all work together to slowly move the club head away from the ball. This is a point that many amateur players get wrong.

Step 1: The Set Up

First and foremost you need to have a good set up for your swing. You need to have your feet shoulder width apart and the club a comfortable length away from your body. The club head should be on the ground behind the golf ball so you are ready to start your swing.

Step 2: The Takeaway

This is the first part of your swing. For the takeaway it sounds exactly how it is, you want to take away your arms and hands holding the club and the club head should come off of the ground shown in the picture. This part has a huge influence on the rest of the swing.

Step 3: The Second Part of Your Backswing

For this part you need to keep taking the club away while starting to bend your wrists to create lag for the ball to be hit correctly. The club should be close to your hips as you are turning your hips away from the target.

Step 4: The End of Your Back Swing

At this point of the swing your club should be parallel to the ground and the club head should be pointing at the ground. Your lead arm should be straight while your other arm should be bent. Your hips should be fully turned away from the target to get the most distance out of your swing.

Step 5: The Start of Your Down Swing

For the down swing it also sounds exactly how it is. You need to release your arms down towards the ball with your wrists still bending away from the target. The club should still be behind you before you hit the ball. You want your wrists bent because in order to hit a good golf shot you have to hit down on the golf ball which is called lag.

Step 6: The Contact With the Ball

This part is for when you are actually in contact with the golf ball. You want to the club head to be pointing down at the ball because you want to hit the ball first before the ground. After the ball is hit your club head should slap the ground and create a divot. If this is done correctly the golf ball should then fly up into the air.

Step 7: Second to Last Part of Your Swing

This part is after you have made contact with the golf ball. Your body should have fully turned toward your target. You want your belly button to be pointing at the target. The club will be in front of you with the face of the club pointing to the sky.
