I have always been told to hold the club lightly. A few times on the putting green I tried holding my putter tight. I seem to get much better distance control and accuracy. Then I tried it with my irons and hit them very well.

I would say firmly but that feel will vary with everyone. What is firm to me may be softly to others. My instructor, because I tend to get too light with the grip, tells me 12 on a scale of 10. Whatever the feel you should try keep it the same pressure through the end of the swing.
