The MK7 GTI houses an updated 2.0t TSI engine (CHHB) and IS20 turbo that puts down 217hp (+10hp) and 258lb-ft (+51tq) out of the factory. While it is quite impressive, it has us enthusiasts questioning, “How can I make the MK7 GTI faster?”. According to some sources, APR pushed the MK7 GTI R (same engine internals as the MK7) internals to the limit and couldn’t break them at 500hp. The possibilities of getting a 350hp MK7 GTI are entirely possible without breaking the bank with these MK7 GTI mods.

What is an APR intercooler?

APR is another well-known Volkswagen aftermarket manufacturer proven to have high quality products. Their intercooler features a bar and plate core, which is more favorable vs a tube and fin, and is organically shaped to maximize airflow through the core. This intercooler is also much bigger than the OEM MK7 GTI intercooler, which provides less pressure drop and cooler intake air temperatures. The data for these intercoolers speaks for itself.

What is a milltek downpipe?

What we like most about the Milltek downpipe is they let the customer decide if they want a catted (regular or high flow) or a catless option. It also allows customers to choose between the downpipe being able to connect to the stock catback exhaust or a Millteck catback exhaust. With this customization comes cost, as you can see with the price listed below. We would suggest if you’re going for catless, go with Milltek.

What is DP in golf?

A downpipe (DP) connects the turbo to the rest of the exhaust system. The stock Volkswagen Golf MK7 GTI downpipe has 2 catalytic converters to ensure the vehicle is compliant with emissions, but this restricts airflow substantially and produces noticeably more back pressure.

How much horsepower can a downpipe make?

A downpipe itself can produce anywhere from 5-25hp without a tune, but with a tune, a downpipe is one of the most important mods to purchase. With a tune and a downpipe, you could net almost a 100hp gain (depending on your setup). Now there’s always a debate between catted vs catless downpipe.

What is an intercooler mod?

Although it is expensive for not a lot of power, it is justified. An intercooler is more of an efficiency and reliability mod. Why do we say this? An aftermarket intercooler brings in cooler air into the combustion chamber, which in turn produces more power. The cooler and denser the air going through your engine, the more power it generates. Heat is what kills power the most and an upgraded intercooler combats this.

What are the pros and cons of piggyback tunes?

The pros for using piggyback tunes are the ECU remains stock, they generally offer advanced safety features, they usually provide on-the-fly map changes, and the best one is the ease of installation.

What is a piggyback tune?

A piggyback tune plugs directly into the ECU. Essentially if you have heard of a plug-and-play tune, you are dealing with a piggyback tune. These tunes don’t re-write the factory ECU. The piggyback tune “tricks” the factory ECU into producing more power by increasing boost or running a more aggressive ignition timing.

What is the difference between a flash tune and a piggyback?

The main difference between a flash tune and a piggyback is that a flash tune re-programs the factory ECU. Another big difference is that instead of being plugged directly into the ECU, flash tunes are essentially uploaded into the ECU.

Does Eurodyne make flash tunes?

They pride themselves on their do-it-yourself ECU upgrade and created a video to illustrate how easy it is to upgrade and install the flash tune. Although this is the priciest tune of the bunch, you are getting an insane bang for your buck with this flash tune.

What is the ZIP stage 2 VW Golf 7 GTI?

The ZIP Stage 2 VW Golf 7 GTI tuning goes a step further. It adds some new parts to help increase the power further. The parts, however, still stay completely safe for the rest of the car. The car gets a new exhaust with a sport catalyst. The exhaust providers are only top class aftermarket parts manufacturers such as Milltek, Akrapovic, Super Sprint, or Army Trix. The choice of the manufacturer of the exhaust is totally up to you, since whatever you choose to install, the car gets dyno tested and the ECU reprogrammed to ensure smooth operation.

Is the VW Golf 7 GTI chiptuning?

Yes, the Stage 1 is just chiptuning, dealing with additional settings to the OEM ECU. There are no new parts whatsoever, so you might think that the power gain can’t be all that noticeable with stock parts, but, as we have already said, after the ZIP Stage 1 VW Golf 7 GTI tuning the car easily measures up to the beastly Golf 7 R. Here is what they do to make it so.

Ignition Coils & Spark Plugs

Before we get started with this mod guide, let’s talk a second to talk about ignition coils and spark plugs. We highly recommend changing all of your spark plugs and all of your ignition coils to ensure you get the full sense of performance out of your engine and mods.

1. MK5 GTI Aftermarket ECU Tune

A tune will almost always be the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to performance mods. The tune that comes out of the factory has much more conservative settings because not everybody buys a GTI to be aggressive believe it or not. Engine performance is one of the many reasons why we suggest a tune, but certainly not the only reason.

2. Aftermarket Downpipes

An aftermarket downpipe, often referred to as DP, is an important part to upgrade if you are going for real power. It connects the turbo to the exhaust system. To ensure the MK5 GTI’s are compliant with emissions, they come standard with two catalytic converters.

3. Aftermarket Intercoolers

A mod that never gains a lot of attention is intercoolers. Yes, it may not be a purely performance mod, but it is an efficiency and reliability mod that allows a lot more power compared to the stock unit.

4. Aftermarket Intakes

Now, these last 2 mods are always argued as a waste of money, but we’ll dive into them now and give our opinions. Air intakes should not be bought strictly for power output. However, compared to OEM intakes, aftermarket intakes bring in a lot more air. The more air the engine pulls in; the more power the engine kicks out.

5. Aftermarket Exhaust

Like the intake, an aftermarket exhaust doesn’t provide much power gains, but it will provide an aggressive sound that we all strive for. Sound aside, an aftermarket exhaust does reduce backpressure because typically the diameter is a little bigger and less restrictive.

Our Choice

There was a time when our go-to choice would have been the Edition 30. After all, it’s essentially the ultimate factory spec for a VW Golf GTI Mk5, and owners are so enamoured of these cars that they’ve started to enjoy an almost cult-like following among ‘lesser’ GTIs.
