Checkpoints for Practice

Left hand position controls most aspects of ball flight - shot direction, shape, trajectory, etc.

Video Transcription: Knuckles Down - Logo Down

When it comes to controlling ball flight, almost everything that dictates where the ball is going to go, how low or high you're going to hit it, what shot shape you're going to have, is dictated by what you do with your left hand.

How to take loft off an iron?

To take loft off an iron, you must keep the left wrist (for right-handers) bowed through impact. As your big muscles rotate to the left through the shot, your left-hand knuckles should be facing the ground ( above ). This puts you in a great position to deliver a descending blow, with less loft than you had at address.

What wrist do high handicappers use?

Many high-handicappers do just the opposite: They cup the left wrist and turn their knuckles toward the sky to lift the ball. That produces a weak shot. Try bowing your wrist, and see the difference. WATCH: GOLF DIGEST VIDEOS.

Where does power come from in golf?

Remember, power comes from clubhead lag, where the clubhead lags behind your hands until your wrists release at the bottom of the swing. One word of caution here: Because you're closing the clubface earlier than you're probably used to, you might start hitting hooks, until you adjust your path into the ball.

What happens if you hit your driver low on the face?

If you frequently hit your driver low on the face, even top the ball, you're probably releasing your wrist hinge too soon on the downswing. You're trying to help the ball get up by making a flipping motion with your hands. It's impossible to generate much clubhead speed doing that.

How to get more clubhead speed?

To create more speed, here's a great swing thought: Rotate your forearms counter-clockwise as you start down, turning the face of your driver to the ground ( above ). Another good feel is to get the back of your glove pointing down, as if you were going to drag your knuckles along the turf.

This is the motorcycle or twistaway move? Someone will need to explain to me how one can retain 'twistaway' later in the downswing with such high inertial forces being supported through the hands (ie. up to 100 lb weight force for a 100 mph swing- equivalent to a bag of cement - approaching impact).

This was mentioned over the weekend On golf channel at some point and having a strong baseball background myself it made a lot of sense to me. The OP basically describes my swing and the issues associated with it, I’m definitely going to be giving this a shot after hearing about his results. Thanks OP :)
