What makes a disc golf disc fly straight?

These discs, normally in the driver category because of the design of the disc, require a lot of speed in order to fly straight during flight. That means you need to have a lot of arm strength and power behind your throw. Overstable discs usually fade into the opposite direction of the disc’s spin.

How do crosswinds affect disc golf discs?

Right-to-left crosswinds will tend to increase both HST and LSF values, pushing down discs with a lower Net Stability and lifting discs with a higher Net Stability. Left-to-right crosswinds will tend to decrease both HST and LSF values, lifting discs with a lower Net Stability and pushing down discs with a higher Net Stability.

Are disc golf discs good for beginners?

These discs are designed to not need as much speed behind them and turn over much more to the right when first thrown. As long as the disc is understable, has high glide, has low speed, and has low fade, it’s good for a beginner.

Are understable discs good for golf?

Also, if you’re new to the game, understable discs are easier to control. This will allow you to be more accurate and get maximum distance from your shots early on. Intermediate to advanced players can also use these understable discs in a variety of ways including specialty shots (like rollers).

Do discs get more or less stable over time?

The faster a disc flies the more stablility it needs. By roughing the surface you increased speed slightly but did not increase stability so it has a higher propensity to turn. 3.

Do disc golf discs wear out?

Given normal wear and tear on a disc from the average player, I feel confident saying that a disc could potentially last throughout the duration of a player's career. In my experience, this will depend on three main factors: Type of plastic the disc is made from. Types of courses you typically play on.

Why do pros use Overstable discs?

When thrown on a hyzer, an overstable disc wants to find the ground. The more stability a disc has, the quicker it will want to dump out of the air and land. This means that the less stability the disc has, the longer it will take to find the ground when thrown on a hyzer.

How many discs do pros carry?

But what about the pros? Well, most professional disc golfers carry between 15 and 25 discs.

Is Star plastic better than champion?

Star plastic offers the same outstanding durability of our regular Champion plastic, plus improved grip like our Pro plastic. Star discs have the same flight characteristics as Champion discs, but are slightly less firm.

What weight discs do pros throw?

Many of the competing players use under 170 gram drivers, especially when throwing uphill or in moderate wind conditions. The most used weight class, apart from Blizzard discs, in distance throws is 165-169 grams.

How long will a disc golf disc last?

A disc's life cycle will vary depending on usage and the types of courses you play on. However, on average players usually find their discs lasting for a very, very long time. Over the course of 6 months, I tracked the flight changes of 11 discs that I consistently used in that time frame.

When should I replace my disc golf?

If you haven't thrown it in any round you can remember in the last year, why is it still in your bag? It's 150 grams you're picking up 60 times a round unnecessarily, make it worth it. As you get better, faster, and stronger, or sometimes even slower, you need different discs.

How many discs should a beginner have?

In order to play disc golf, you need at least 3 discs: a driver, a mid-range, and a putter. But you should carry at least 6 discs (2 of each type) with you whenever you go out to play a round.

What are the characteristics of disc golf?

Speed. How fast the disc flies through the air is one of the most important factors of disc flight. Speed can determine how far a disc goes and how quickly it gets there. Speed, in disc golf, can also greatly affect stability.

How does a disc golf disc fly through the air?

A disc golf disc flies through the air by using gyroscopic inertia and 7 other different elements of physics to maintain flight such as:

Why are putters not aerodynamic?

Putters have a wide, rounded rim (most of the time), which is bad for disc flight. This is why if you try to throw a putter on a drive, it won’t fly as fast or as far. There is too much drag. Putters are not aerodynamic. Mid-range discs are a little bit better in this regard. This is why the mid-range can fly farther. It has better aerodynamics. The rim is a little bit more sleek allowing the disc to have less drag during a throw. Distance drivers are the best examples of discs that have superior aerodynamics. They are sleek and thin, reducing drag to almost nothing. This allows distance drivers to be thrown fast and far.

How to tell if a disc is thrown too high?

Pitch, in relation to disc golf, refers to how steeply a disc is pointed (nose up or nose down) after it is thrown. The pitch of the disc will determine how far the disc travels. If the disc is pointed up too steep, it may travel very high in the air, but will eventually slow down and fall back to the ground. Just think about if you were to throw the disc up really high at an angle. The disc would fly up pretty far, but then come back down toward you (kind of like a boomerang). If you throw the disc straight down, it will just crash to the ground not far in front of you. The more level you can make the disc, the greater chance you have for the disc to fly great distances. Too much angle on the disc will cause it to not fly very far.

How much practice does it take to throw a disc in disc golf?

There are so many factors in disc flight that can cause the disc to fly poorly. It takes hundreds and hundreds of hours practice to really improve your game and get better at not just keeping the disc in the air, but becoming accurate with it. Playing disc golf is really tough.

What forces pull discs down?

It is the force that holds us to the earth and the same force that causes discs to fall to the ground after being thrown. Gravity is really tough to work with. Gravity pulls the disc down and can kill a good throw. If you’d like to learn a little bit more about how gravity works, you can read about it here.

Why is the mid range better?

This is why the mid-range can fly farther. It has better aerodynamics. The rim is a little bit more sleek allowing the disc to have less drag during a throw. Distance drivers are the best examples of discs that have superior aerodynamics. They are sleek and thin, reducing drag to almost nothing.

Should You Break In A Disc?

Whether a broken in disc works for you is all down to preference. It can be a good idea to break in your discs if you’d prefer it to be understable, and you’ll be eager for the disc to be broken in sooner rather than later… but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

How To Break In Your Discs Faster

It can take about 6 months to organically break in your discs and make them as understable as you would like them to be, and this of course depends on how often you’re using them.

Final Thoughts: When To Hang Up Your Discs

Unfortunately, we all have to say farewell to some discs. You may use a disc for so long that it’s broken into the point that it’s unusable.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hi, everyone! My name is James, and I love sharing what I’ve learned about disc golf. It struck me as odd that such an amazing sport could be overlooked by so many people. To help spread the joys of disc golf and to provide some useful tips for improvement, I created the Disc Golf Mentor website. Thanks for stopping by!

How to improve disc golf?

1. Master turn and fade: hopefully you’ve begun to understand turn and stability as you’ve gone through this post. But you need to take it a step further in order to improve and master stability. Learn how low-speed fade can affect disc flight.#N#2. Throw the right discs for your skill level: we’ve talked a little bit about discs and skill level in this post, but we stress this important concept all over our site. Make sure that you are throwing discs that pair with the skill level you are currently at. Understable discs are mainly for beginner players, stable discs are for intermediate players, and overstable discs are for really good players. Simple, right?#N#3. Why not learn a little bit more about disc flight?: knowing the physics of disc flight can be helpful and can give you a small advantage on the course. Check out or post, “How Does a Disc Golf Disc Fly Through the Air?”#N#4. Learn about Hyzer and Anhyzer: understanding how the disc flies according to release angle can really affect your disc golf game. Learning this allows you to use stability and angle together to be able to throw any shot on the course. Check out our post, “What’s the Difference Between a Hyzer and an Anhyzer?”#N#5. Practice: this is probably one of the most taken for granted tips for getting better at anything in the world of disc golf. But I still post it as a tip all the time. Want to get better at driving? Go practice. Want to putt better? Go practice. And if you want to master stability and how discs fly, go practice. This tip is simple and easy, too.

What happens when a disc is released flat?

Understable: discs will turn over to the right when released flat.

What is an overstable disc?

Now overstable discs are those that are not really meant for beginners. These discs, normally in the driver category because of the design of the disc, require a lot of speed in order to fly straight during flight. That means you need to have a lot of arm strength and power behind your throw. Overstable discs usually fade into the opposite direction of the disc’s spin. So for a rhbh thrower, the disc will spin right and turn to the left. But these discs are usually the most predictable for better players, which is why pros love them so much.#N#These discs work well in a variety of situations including: serious headwind, skip shots, and for when you need a disc that finishes hard left.

What is the best understable disc for beginners?

Best understable discs for beginners. The Innova Leopard is definitely one of the best beginner fairway drivers. It literally comes in Innova’s beginner disc golf pack. Check out the Leopard here on InfiniteDiscs.com or you can get it in this beginner pack on Amazon. I also love the Latitude 64 River fairway driver.

What is the difference between an overstable disc and an understable disc?

Whereas understable discs turn over more to the right at the beginning of flight. When first thrown, overstable turns more left and understable turns more right. Check out Ivan Katz’s explanation of overstable and understable.

What factors determine disc flight?

Lastly, stability is one of the key factors for determining disc flight. Are you playing with the right discs for your skill level? Don’t worry if you’re not, because we’ll go over this in detail.

What determines if a disc is going to turn right or left?

The level of stability in a disc will determine if it is going to turn to the right right away, fly straight through the whole flight, or fade to the left early on in the disc’s flight. And this is determined by each individual disc.

What happens when you throw a golf disc higher than the trailing edge?

Golf discs are no different. So, throwing a disc with the leading edge (nose) higher than the trailing edge wrecks the gliding performance of the disc.

Why do golf discs not have lift?

Some very overstable golf discs with high parting lines do not generate any upwards lift at all on the top surface of the wing due to a low pressure area when thrown flat , and all lift is produced by way of deflecting air downwards below the Parting Line.

Why is it important to keep thumb pressed down?

During the pull-through, smash and release, it is very important to keep that thumb pressed down firmly, because that is what dictates the nose angle of the disc. You will find that the very first time you rip a disc with a nose-flat attitude you will probably break your personal distance record.

How much difference in nose angle makes a big difference to drag on a disc?

Fig 1. shows a 2 degree difference in nose angle makes a big difference to the drag on a disc.

How to grip a disc?

As you grip the disc, you need to push the thumb downwards firmly, such that the wrist is dragged down with it – this is known as Ulnar Deviation, and is the same movement you make to shake hands. The disc should be aligned with the Plane of Play Push down until the disc is parallel with the forearm bones.

Why do discs fly nose up?

Standing on the back foot to throw This is the most common cause of nose-up, sky-high disc flights for absolute beginners. Many beginner players do not know that weight must be completely transferred to the front foot in the throwing motion.

Why does my disc wobble?

Disc wobble can also be the result of the disc spinning too slowly for its forward speed, which is a frequent issue when learning to throw forehand.

Are You Playing With Illegal Discs?

You will only really be questioned if you are playing with an illegal disc during tournament play, not in recreational play – unless you’re playing with people who take their recreational Disc Golf seriously!

When Should I Replace My Discs?

It makes sense that the more you use your disc, the more wear and tear you’re going to see, regardless of where you’re playing. As you sustain more and more cuts and scratches you’ll notice your disc getting lighter.

Are Some Discs More Durable Than Others?

When it comes to Disc Golf, not all discs (and the plastic they are made from) are created equal. As is the case with any piece of sporting equipment, the pricey items tend to be the most durable and are a worthy investment if you’re serious about the sport.

How to Repair Discs

As we have mentioned it is possible to repair your golf discs, as long as you don’t go overboard and make too many modifications so that your disc becomes illegal.

How to fix a Hero disc?

First, wipe and clean your disc. Next, with gloves on, push back punctured plastic as close as possible into original position. Be careful, as there might be sharp points on the disc, making gloves a necessary tool. Next, apply a light flame to the affected area.

Can you repair a disc?

Again, not all damage to your discs can be repaired. Severe bite/puncture marks and cracks in your discs are not repairable. Always use caution when using heat related equipment!

Can you repair a puncture on a Hero disc?

Note: Not all bite and puncture marks can be repaired. This is only a guide to help repair most trouble spots on your Hero discs.

How Does A Disc Golf Disc Fly Through The Air?

The Complexity of Disc Flight

  • Disc flight is actually way more complex than one might think. To most of us, you simply throw a disc and it flies. It’s just a magic spinning disc that flies really far (or so some would say). It’s crazy to think that there’s a whole science behind disc flight. But you need to learn how disc flight works in relation to how it’s thrown so that you can perfect your throws, master disc flight, and b…

Gyroscopic Inertia

  • Okay, with this I’m going to simplify it about as much as I possibly can because the majority of physics just goes over my head. The definition of Gyroscopic Inertia is, “a body that is set spinning has a tendency to keep spinning in its original orientation.” A disc is sent flying through the air with a spin and this “body,” or disc, will continue spinning until something causes it to not spin. S…
