How to keep your eyes on the ball?

As the saying goes "keep your eyes on the ball" so that means following the ball with your eyes once it takes off. To do that you will need to rotate your head/face towards the target. Keeping your head down too long is detrimental and a common mistake people make as the first thing they are told when they start playing is to keep their head down. What happens when a player restricts their head too long is it restricts their pivot from coming through the ball. Obviously, if a player doesn't rotate through the shot then they will lose power, but even worse, when the pivot stops the club accelerates too quickly often resulting in an early release and a sprayed shot. Best advice; keep your eyes on the ball, but keep following it with your eyes and your pivot after impact.

Who said he just looks down and sees the entire ball as whole?

While the greatest female player of all time looked in front of the ball, the greatest of all male players, Jack Nicklaus, said once that he just looks down and sees the entire ball as whole. He didn't focus on the front, back, top or bottom, he just looked down at the ball. This is how I, myself have always played as well. In fact, I think you will find that the vast majority of players fall into this category. What you will find though is that there are many styles and it's really all over the board with both professionals and amateurs. There is no rule here. Like most things in golf it's just a matter of finding what works for you and sticking with it.

OK I've been working diligently since winter ended up here in MD. Not that it seems to be over. But anyway.

OK I've been working diligently since winter ended up here in MD. Not that it seems to be over. But anyway. Ive been making pretty solid contact with all clubs; wedges get chili dipped and drivers get dummy marks, more often than id like but all in all more consistent than last year.

Better eyesight? The only guys I've personally known to have this problem had terrible eyesight. These guys literally asked their playing partners on the first tee if they could watch their ball for them. Otherwise, there could end up being 4 or 5 lost balls just because no one saw it.

chrstianrockboy

I have used yellow balls they help on the course, unfortunately the range and the longer clubs are the primary problems.

JetFan1983

Every now and then we all hit a shot where we say immediately after impact "where'd that go??" But those shots get rarer and rarer the more you play.

David in FL

Crud. I thought this was gonna be a thread about old guys like me that hit it further than they can see. :- (

I can feel a pull hook pretty easy, but a straight hook that I absolutely crush usually feels like a great shot...

Have you seen an optometrist about this issue? Sounds like something they may be better suited to address than us.

andrue

Can you follow other player's balls? I often fail to see where my own ball has gone but can always follow other player's.

wkuo3

Sounds like you'll need to pay a visit to your optometrist. Could be alot of cause for not able to floow the golf ball in the sky ( especially in those Grey glaring days ). Could be the beginning of cataract.

Philomathesq

I second (or +5) to seeing an eye care professional. The only other thing I may try is switching to a vibrant-colored ball. My son likes to play a bright orange ball, and I have found that it is easier to spot in the air and on the ground.

jkumpire

Thanks for you help so far, my optometrist has told me I am about a year from getting cataracts taken off my eyes, one of the prices we sports officials pay for umpiring sports in the summer sun for decades. I sometimes play optic green Bridgestone B-330rxs' in optic green, but they do not help often. Now that I play ProV1's color is a problem.

Rohlio

As we age the framerate processing of our optical input slows down. It is actually partially responsible for why time seems to pass faster as we age. You will notice this in high frame rate activities such as cars driving by and golf balls flying.

GSDriver

Play colored balls. Oakley makes golf specific Rx lenses, I have the progressive lens equivalent, they're magical.

How to hit down on a golf ball?

It’s one thing to know that you need to hit down on the ball – it’s another thing to actually make that happen. You need to have both your body and the club in the right position if you are going to move the club down through the ball effectively. If you are out of position, it won’t matter how much you want to hit down, as it simply won’t be possible. Since the golf swing happens quickly, you don’t have enough time to make up for any mistakes that occur along the way. You need to be in the right position from start to finish if you hope to produce consistent results.

How to get the ball off the ground?

When you hear that the best way to get the ball off the ground is to hit down through impact with your irons, you need to believe that is the case. If you are still thinking in the back of your mind that it makes more sense to lift up through impact to help the ball on its way, you’re never going to reach your goals.

How to get iron shots off the ground?

In this article, we are going to talk specifically about one key element of getting your iron shots off the ground – hitting down through impact. Many new golfers are surprised to learn that the key to getting iron shots airborne is actually to hit down through the ball at the bottom of the swing. That seems backwards on the surface, but it starts to make sense the more you think about it. Since your irons all have some degree of loft built into the club head design, you can hit down and trust that loft to do the job of getting the ball off the ground. As long as you make clean contact, backspin will be produced at impact – and that backspin will help the ball to climb higher as it flies. Once a golfer experiences the feeling of hitting down and seeing the ball go up, everything changes. If you are still struggling to get the ball off the ground when swinging your irons, we hope the content below helps you get on the right track.

What does a divot mean in golf?

Why do people top the ball when they hit the equator?

How to convince yourself that golf is the right way to go?

A good way to convince yourself that this method is the right way to go is to take some time to watch a bit of golf on TV (or watch golf highlights online). By watching the best players in the world make their way around the course, you can see how they get the job done. For the vast majority of the iron shots you see the pros play, there will be a divot which comes up after the ball has been struck. That divot can only mean one thing – the player has hit down nicely through the ball.

What does it mean when a golf club is leaning to the left?

That means the club is going to wrap around the body at the top of the swing, and the body weight may be pulled toward the target prematurely.
