One thing about disc golf is that not a lot of people play the sport. Don’t get me wrong, there are hundreds of thousands all over the world, but that’s still just a small percentage of people.

The great thing about disc golf is that you can be 75 years old and it wouldn’t matter. If you can use good technique to throw the disc, you can play. And it also doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor.

The Basic Disc Golf Rules

The Why Game

I love the why game, especially the relentless way kids play it. In this post, I’m going to play the why game with my favorite question: Why do people play disc golf?

Gender

It’s no secret: Women are hard to find on a disc golf course. Per the PDGA, between 1999 and 2017, the percentage of women among PDGA members ranged from 6 to 8 percent. Other disc golf studies offer similar or lower estimates (7).

Race

Little is known about the racial composition of disc golfers. In the past, the PDGA did not collect data on the racial characteristics of its members; its most recent survey did include a relevant question, but the results have not yet been released.

Geography

More is known about the geographical barriers to playing disc golf. The PDGA and other groups track the opening and closing of disc golf courses. As expected, states with large populations, such as California and Texas, tend to have more disc golf courses, more PDGA members, and a greater number of PDGA-sanctioned events than small states (17).

Socio-Economic Status

Several studies have revealed socioeconomic disparities in the distribution of recreational resources, public parks and green spaces, where roughly 90 percent of disc golf courses are located (19). Most of these studies find that as the poverty of neighborhoods increases, the distance from these neighborhoods to parks and green spaces increases.

Ideally, the easiest thing to do would be to walk into a sporting goods store and simply purchase a disc golf starter pack. Such starter packs are perfect because in them you will get a beginner friendly putter, mid-range, and control driver.

After throwing a single disc for a while and mastering it, you may decide its time to add another one to your arsenal. But how do you know when you’ve mastered a disc?

Playing With and Cycling One Golf Disc

If you find a disc that you really like, I would encourage you to stick with it. However, over time golf discs can take a lot of damage from high impact throws into trees and other hard objects. As discs get beat in, you’ll find that the flight characteristics being to change.

One Disc Challenge With Friends

A very fun game variation in disc golf is to challenge your friends to play an entire round with just a single disc. You can either pick a specific disc that everyone has to use or allow everyone to pick their disc. In my experience, those that pick a mid-range always do the best.

If you’re only going to be playing with one disc, you need to decide which disc you’re going to use. As we established before, there are numerous disc to choose from. And it is absolutely essential that you get this part right.

When To Get Multiple Golf Discs

At a certain point of mastering new discs in all of the disc categories, you’ll get pretty good at picking up a brand new disc and learning it quickly. You may not even need to use it for an entire solo round, since it will likely be similar to a disc you’ve already mastered.
