A "Five of Clubs" tournament is one in which each golfer has to choose only five of his or her clubs to use during the tournament. Leave the rest of your clubs at home. Should you use a three iron on the golf course?
Dec 07, 2016 · Most players have no gaps beyond 7-iron, and are not consistent enough to warrant multiple wedges. If you limited a driver shaft to 3-wood length that would help with the distance the ball is travelling. You would need some sort of lofted fairway/hybrid, a sand iron and a putter. So a bag would be: 3-wood. 7-wood. 7-iron.

Josh Carr (5 handicap)
"I personally would take a three iron, an eight iron and a sand wedge/56-degree out with me. I can get enough distance with a three iron off the tee and I am quite confident with it. I could also use it for putting, as it isn’t very lofted.
Kieran Clark (18 handicap)
"Looking at my own game and assuming that I'm playing the Old Course at St. Andrews - which I'm fortunate enough to play quite frequently - I would take my three-wood, seven-iron, and sand wedge out to navigate unsuccessfully around the famous links.
Andrew Picknen (19 handicap)
"I have never played in this sort of a challenge and always preferring to lug around the full 14 clubs. This kitchen sink approach isn't the best for creative golf and shot making.
Darren Ramowski (20 handicap)
"For me I would probably try and do something to out-think the others, which would probably be the wrong option! I'd take a 3-wood, which I'd use for putting as well, a 7-iron and a 56-degree wedge ."

Next tourney in the men's league is a 4 club, as in choose 4 clubs and only 4, including putter, and then move up one tee box and we are playing it as a modified stableford. I have two theories here. First is, from one up, the course play only like 6200 yards or so. So I would go 5 iron, 7 or 8 iron, PW, and putter.

OP Like your thinking and since you said you are not a consistent driver of the ball I would go with the clubs you picked. Personally I drive the ball pretty straight so would go with driver, 7i or 8i, sw, putter.

4 clubs?! That's too easy. The real challenge is 3 clubs. Then you never know wether to bring your putter or not.
Santiago Golf
no putter. I can still belly a wedge. I know I won't make any putt of distance, but in this format, most people won't be making many birdies to start, so I would rather have the exta wedge to get round the green

I have a full bag of clubs (14). Reality is I only use 6, maybe 7 of them in every round.. Scores are the same no matter how many clubs I might use.

I tend to play with 7-9 clubs depending on the course (typically based on par 3 lengths). Makes it easier to carry and walk - important at my age. Also with a fairly slow swing speed (75-80 mph) 3-4 deg gaps don't really translate into big difference in distance.

I probably hit no more than nine clubs per round. That doesn't mean I don't need the other five clubs. I never know what I might run into. Different courses and conditions require different shots.

A non-golfing friend once asked me if I really needed "all those clubs". I replied "No...not every round...but a particular shot might be a 6 iron, one day, and an 8 iron the next...depending on the wind and the lie". My friend was skeptical.

Well, I rarely hit the 3 wood. Occasionally off the tee when either very prudent or a necessity. I hit the 5 wood a bit more. After that, I use all my clubs. I chip/pitch with 4 different clubs, and will hit greenside blast bunker shots with as many as 5 clubs, and occasionally 6.
