The problem is the belt is slightly out of alighnment at the alt. The mess of attachments holding the alt has to be just right or the belt will overheat and break. I placed a prybar between the pulley and subframe while attachments were loose and nudged the alt over to align it.

It should be absolutely fine, providing the alternator isn't actually faulty. Maybe it's worth checking the regulator and ensuring it isn't generating a voltage outside of spec (i.e. voltage too high).

On many alterntors the charging light is seperate to the actual charging cicuit so should only be used as a guide to whats going on in the alternator.

I suppose it depends whether you consider the regulator as part of the alternator or not.
