What is the MK7 Golf R?
The legendary Golf R is the beefier big brother to the GTI, which already sports amazing performance potential, but lacks the total package found in the top-of-the-line hot hatchback from Wolfsburg. With a Haldex 4motion AWD system, lightning-quick DSG gearbox, and nearly 300hp at the crank from the reworked 2.0T FSI engine, the Golf R is a capable platform out of the box and competes directly with the Subaru STI, now dead Mitsubishi EVO X, and the Ford Focus RS. However, what if you want to make your Golf R something a little more ‘you’? We at ECS Tuning know a few tips to help get you started by improving the little hatchback efficiently with the most bang for your buck, so follow along for the best mods for your VW MK7 Golf R.
What is sway bar upgrade?
Upgrading your sway bars to larger diameter units with adjustable mounts allows you to dial in how much body roll you experience in the corners and can help dial in under or oversteer to work in your favor. For this, we recommend H&R Front and Rear Sway Bars. If you are driving the car hard on technical courses or roads, pairing upgraded sway bars with coilovers is a sure-fire way to improve your times. Remember, it’s all about using the performance the car already has more efficiently! These suspension upgrades will reduce the amount of time off the throttle in corners, which translates to better performance even without increasing power.
How to improve braking performance?
Along the same lines as the suspension recommendations, higher-performance pads, rotors, and lines will decrease your stopping distances and increase the amount of time you can spend with your foot on the go pedal. By allowing your brakes to work more efficiently, you can achieve the same or better braking performance in much less time and distance for better corner entry and more power on the exits. We suggest Hawk Performance pads and their new Hawk Talon rotors as a great starting point. For builds that are exploring the upper limits of available power from the car, though, you might want to consider choosing a true big brake kit like the ones from StopTech.
Is the Golf R the cheapest car to own?

Hello all, I'm new to the site, just want some advice on some modifications I'm planning, I've just purchased a 16 plate golf r dsg, and even though I'm really impressed with its performance etc, the need to modify has grown lol
Stefan88
With those mods you can skip the stage 1 map and go straight for stage 2 if you chuck an intercooler In there.
Msportman
But you'll need at least some sort of brake upgrade even stock they suffer so it's a prerequisite even on a stage 1 car even its just pads and fluid change.
Tommyhughes123
Thanks for replying guys, so is that r600 intake a waste then? Where is that unicorn based? Heard lots of good things about unicorn, also people have been saying about a forge blow off valve, I like the idea of upgrading the factory one, but many people say they are no good, that they stall and end up being worse than the factory one!
toocoolpash
in regards to the forge blow off valve, I had one and replaced it with their recirculation valve.
Williams327
Personally would go stage 1 first TT intake pipe and a map as mentioned above. See how you get on with the new power increase then if your left wanting more progress to a downpipe/stage2 map. Unless your tracking the car standard brake setup is more then adequate for fast road use.
Tommyhughes123
Thank you guys! Anyone direct me to unicorn please? Lol also any got a small vid of their aftermarket exhausts please

VUDU Performance Golf R Stage 1 Remap

VUDU Performance DSG Remap
Many of the Volkswagen Golf owners quite rightly opt for the automatic DSG gearbox, and with good reason. It's an absolute pleasure to drive, has an optional manual mode with paddle shift, and gives you a 0-60 time quicker than the manual Golf.
Forge Motorsport Turbo Muffler Delete & Inlet Hose
This duo of products lends itself fantastically to the use of the R600 induction kit, no questions. With a wealth of knowledge gained over 25 years, Forge Motorsport has developed some stunning products, two of which are our favourites, used across all our tuning packages from stage 1 to stage 3.
Golf R Exhaust Upgrade
We all get bored of the sound potential ruined by resonators, GPF systems, and catalytic converters.

I know there's a few companies that have brought out lowering springs for the mk7, but as far as I know no one has made any anti-roll bars for it yet, does anyone know if VWR or H&R are working on some? I want to improve the handling and turn in a little bit as I did with my mk5 and mk6 but a bit reluctant to opt for some springs just yet what with all the bad reviews they seem to be getting..
C4MKVI
For me I feel there's still a bit too much body roll on fast bends which would be sorted out with some thicker ARBs
wigit
i'll got a great shot showing how much these roll, when i am back in bligty i will post it up
wigit
If you set up the arbs not very well you get no roll and just under steer with little progression
AP Automotive
H&R do now offer front and rear Anti - Roll bars for the 7R, we had this confirmed today.

Is the VW Golf 7 GTI chiptuning?
Yes, the Stage 1 is just chiptuning, dealing with additional settings to the OEM ECU. Open up the airbox under the seat (not decided on the best way to do this yet): I am thinking of cutting a large square with a panel filter and a "hood" that protects water from splashing on it. Or venting the side cover with a panel filter to help get some air in but would also help for a 2 stage filtration?

subxero
Anyone else "derestricting" their xtrainers? I really like the idea of the xtrainer and think it would suit me well but I just can't get over the drop in power up top. That is not something I'm willing to give up.
dstewart
Increasing the compression will generally only improve bottom end and mid range, sometimes it can actually hurt top end and overrev. A pipe will have the biggest effect on top end power. A mid to top end pipe like the Fresco will restore top end power, but you may lose some on the bottom.
