A mate of mine has a stage 2 Golf R and another has a stage 1. Both of them bought the cars brand new and they've not had one bit of bother with either of them. One is 2 year into ownership and the other 1 year, 12000 and 8000 miles respectively. Faultless motoring.

like all these things really depends how your drive it, a hard driven standard car could wear out quicker than a lightly driven mapped car. I have mapped cars for years and never had any problems, but always had mechanical sympathy

Ive seen mention of smeared bearings on these cars when tuned (although seen no evidence to back this up). IIRC it was stage 2 cars where this was prominent, and could have been down to the torque of stage 2 being too much for the bearings. . .
