If you are a former PE2 player, what irons did you switch to, why, and how did the change work out? I've been sitting on the fence about changing my irons and need some MySpyGolf Agents intervention.

Ping Eye 2's are an awesome club. Note, I am using present tense. More modern clubs have specs that are a club longer, for instance many modern PW's are 45* or even 42* where the Eye 2 9 iron is 45*. So if you get new clubs you will be hitting a 9 iron where before you were hitting an 8.

GolfSpy MBP

I bagged my PE2's full time until 2008 (1990-2008) when I got some Nickent forged cavity backs, transition was pretty easy. Only differences I really notice is 2 things: I'm a club longer with modern irons and you can get a smoother fell, but that's not saying the PE2's aren't smooth.

revkev

I fit the bill - a former Ping Eye 2 player who gamed mine for two decades. I'm also a guy who played fairly good golf once, good enough that I could be competitive in regional type tournaments - city and club championships, maybe qualify for a State Amateur Type of player.

RoverRick

Also the Eye 2 is non-confirming for many events if you wish to play tournament golf at a higher level.

fixyurdivot

I don't think that is the case. Ping won a lawsuit back in the 80's, and thus are exempt for the groove rule. Michelson threatened to play them for a protest. I believe he decided not to play them, unless Ping said they would allow them to be ruled non-conforming.

yungkory

I played PE2's from the time I was a junior golfer in the mid '90s, through high school, and a few years after until ~2006 or so. I took a ~10year break from playing golf and when I came back a little over a year ago, I was stronger than when I was a kid. Every club went the same distance, and nearly orbiting the moon.

I just recently picked up a set of the Ping Eye 2 + no + irons, 3-PW, ZZ-Lite shaft, Red Dot for $89 and Play it Again sports and they were in mint condition. Barely played. I went out and shot a 71 with them and that's the best round I've had all year. I can't explain how wonderful these irons feel.

blackxpress

I've had this on my mind lately. A buddy of mine owns a golf shop and he just took in a set of mint condition Eye 2 BeCu black dots. He wants too much for them IMO ($279) or else I would've bought them already.

famousdavis

You're crazy if you think $287 is too much to spend for a mint set of BeCu Ping Eye 2 irons. A set in mint condition will easily fetch $400+ on Ebay. When I graduated from high school my parents bought me set of Ping Eye 2 Copper irons 2-LW and I think it cost them around $900 at the time.

neurodoc

I suspect you're a troll. I belong to three private clubs, including two of the most exclusive west of the Rockies, and I find that Ping irons are an almost infallible indicator of someone who flat can't play.

famousdavis

Anyone who claims to belong to 3 private clubs could only be a basement dweller living with his mom. If anyone is trolling it's you my friend. I posted this thread because I was excited about my Ping Eye 2 + no + with ZZ-Lite shafts purchase. Red Dot by the way. You come on here and flame me for no reason. Gee, thanks for the warm welcome.

max power

They are great clubs, and I love the old school loft gaps. Still, I've hit multiple sets in excellent shape (regular and BeCu) and found my MX-200s and 775s superior. Just a tad too much offset and a slightly harsher feeling out of the PINGs. I still lust after them though.

famousdavis

I'm surprised to hear that because I've tried the Titleist 775 and I found them much harsher than the Ping Eye 2 BeCu. Now, if you're hitting off of mats I can understand why the 775 might feel softer. However, on the course the Ping Eye 2s feel much better.
