Why is my oil pressure light on in my Volkswagen Golf?

Modern vehicles use an electric oil pressure sending unit. If your Golf’s sensor has gone bad, it’ll shoot a false low pressure reading to the ECM. One of the first things that people do when they have the low oil pressure light is to change out this sensor to see if that rectifies the problem.

How to diagnose low oil pressure in a golf?

This valve can only allow so much oil through, and may trigger the oil light. Here are a few of the steps that you can pursue to diagnose your low oil pressure condition: As stated above, checking the oil level in your Golf is definitely the place to start diagnosing low oil pressure.

What does the oil pressure light mean on a car?

The oil pressure is actually the sensor that monitors the engine’s oil pressure, and its only job is to switch on or off the oil pressure light. These sensors are often made of plastic, and it happens that these sensors fail.

What does the oil pump do on a Volkswagen Golf?

The oil pump is responsible for taking the oil from the oil pan and pumping it through your Golf’s engine. When it begins wearing out, its ability to pump oil will be diminished. There is a screen in most oil pumps that keeps large debris from entering.

What causes low oil pressure when engine is cold?

Cold Weather Slows the Flow of Oil When you start your vehicle, its oil pump forces oil under pressure through the oil filter, main bearings and other parts of the engine. During cold weather, an engine's motor oil becomes thicker. It flows more slowly through the engine and is harder to pump through the engine block.

Why is my oil pressure high on cold start?

You may have noticed that your oil gauge reads higher at cold start up, this is telling you have more resistance to flow, and probably at a point in time you need faster flow (less pressure). At this point and until the engine warms up and the oil pressure stabilises, you do not have proper lubrication.

Why does my oil light come on when I come to a stop?

If the oil light flickers on and off while the vehicle is stopped or at an idle, there may be a problem with the oil sensor or the pressure is too low. At the very least, the engine should have 5 PSI when not moving. If the PSI is less than 5, this will trigger the oil light and cause it to flicker off and on.

Why does my oil light keep coming on but my oil isn't low?

The oil light on your dashboard doesn't always mean your oil is low, leaking, or dirty. Instead, it might mean that your oil pressure sensor or your oil pump needs to be replaced.

Can overfilling oil cause high oil pressure?

Overfilling also increases oil pressure, putting more stress on seals and gaskets that keep oil from leaking out of the engine or going places it shouldn't on the inside. Over time, the added stress accelerates wear on those seals and gaskets.

What should oil pressure be startup?

The oil pressure gauge should read somewhere between 25 to 65 PSI while the engine is running. Should it start creeping higher (think 80+ PSI), then you've got yourself a problem with high oil pressure. When this happens, it disrupts the ability of your engine to function correctly.

How do I know if my oil pump is failing?

There are many symptoms to look for when the oil pump goes bad. Some of the common symptoms are: noise from the valve train, strange noises from the hydraulic lifters, reduced oil pressure, a hotter engine, and a noisy oil pump. What is this? Usually, the oil pump doesn't get servicing until it actually starts to fail.

Can a clogged oil filter cause oil light to come on?

However, oil filters tend to get clogged after a while, especially when they are not replaced during an oil change. Once this happens, the oil pressure in your vehicle will decrease and the oil pressure warning light of your engine will activate.

Why does my oil light keep coming on even though my oil is full?

Causes of a flickering oil light If your oil light stays on even after changing your engine oil, you're going to want to check the sensor first to rule out a malfunctioning sensor as the cause. Dirt and other particles can make their way into the oil pump, causing the sensor to falsely identify oil issues.

Can a bad fuel pump cause low oil pressure?

A bad oil pump will lose the ability to properly pump oil through your system. This will result in low oil pressure that could lead to further vehicle damage.

Why is my oil pressure light on?

10 Causes of Why Your Oil Pressure Light is On. Having high oil pressure is one of the things which makes a modern engine’s life so much longer than car engines before in time. The oil pressure light is used to show up on your dashboard if the oil pressure in your car is too low or too high. Very low oil pressure or no oil pressure ...

Why is my oil pressure sensor light up?

When the instrument cluster can’t feel the signal from the oil pressure sensor because of a broken wire or bad connection – it will light up the oil pressure light. Check the connector at the oil pressure sensor for any corrosion signs and make sure that the wires look good. Next step is to measure the wirings.

What is a bad oil pressure sensor?

The oil pressure is actually the sensor that monitors the engine’s oil pressure, and its only job is to switch on or off the oil pressure light. These sensors are often made of plastic, and it happens that these sensors fail. If you locate it on the engine block and you see a lot of engine oil around it – it may be ...

What causes low oil pressure?

A chain often drives it from the crankshaft, but it can also be built directly around the crankshaft. It sometimes happens that this oil pump fails, which can cause a low oil pressure – which will cause the oil pressure light to show up.

How many wires does an oil pressure sensor need?

For the sensor to function, it needs one or two wires going between the instrument cluster and the oil pressure sensor. The engine compartment becomes hot while you are driving, and there are constant vibrations. This can cause wirings to get a bad connection or actually fail and break off completely.

Why is there a net on the bottom of the oil pan?

Unfortunately, dirt is also collected on the bottom of the oil pan. This tube contains a “net” to prevent dirt and other parts from getting sucked into the oil pump. If your car is old, and especially if the car’s oil maintenance has been bad, this pickup tube can get clogged by dirt and other oil sludge.

What is the role of oil filter in car engine?

The oil filter plays an important role in filtering all these contaminants and preventing them from entering the engine.

Craps you up when that warning buzzer goes doesn't it? My old Scirocco used to do the same thing (1.8ltr) and the switch was goosed.

harminder

Ok changed the switch and the car was fine and then the second time I drove it the STOP sign and oil pressure sign come on again!

Rustynuts

Could be the oil pick up pipe in the sump is sludged up. I think they have a mesh filter covering the end. Dropping the sump and having a look could be the next step for me.

colinc

I had the same sort of problem on a Mk4 Golf 1.6, the problem was eventually diagnosed to a faulty engine speed sensor, It gave me serious heart issues when the "STOP" lit whilst I was passing a truck uphill!!

Rustynuts

The "STOP" signal will flash up whenever there's an issue, but it's the oil pressure light accompanying it which indicates the problem here.

colinc

Exactly my point. mine said "STOP" "oil pressure" but it was actually a fault with the engine speed sensor

harminder

Had it checked out by a VW specialist and the garage found nothing wrong.

Why is my CC low oil pressure?

The number one reason that your CC would have low oil pressure would be a lack of oil. The first thing you should do, is check your engine oil level.

What happens if you don't have oil pressure on a CC?

Always treat low oil pressure in your CC seriously. If there is no oil pressure the engine will lock up and fail very fast . We recommend having a mechanic take a look at it. Good luck!

What happens if oil level is lower than it should be?

Air in Oil. If the oil level is significantly lower in the pan than it should be, air can get into the oil pump and aerate the oil. Think about it like the foam on a cappuccino or beer. It’s the same liquid, but has totally different characteristics when foamy.

What to do if oil is low?

If the oil level is really low, you’ll need to fill it up until it’s back to the full mark. This may solve the problem. Keep in mind that if the oil has leaked out once, it will leak out again. You’ll need to start checking it much more often.

Can you drive a car with low oil?

Do not drive a vehicle with low engine oil to the store to buy more oil. Running without enough oil to keep pressure in the crank case will certainly look up the engine. It’s not a matter of if it will lock up the engine, it’s only a matter of when.
