If you were on average to shoot mid-80’s but do shoot from time to time in the low 70’s you must post those scores because it won’t take long before the Handicap Committee notices your tournament score trends and you’ll be tagged by your peers as a sandbagger. Not a good thing.

You might not realize it, but when you’re playing golf with a large group or even one partner, you need to focus on many more things that are not related to golf compared to when you’re golfing alone. Should you post your golf scores if you don't have a handicap?

Not having a handicap does not exclude them from any events, so why go through the effort of posting golf scores after every round. Personally, I cannot see not establishing an official handicap because it is provides a great bench mark. Additionally, if by chance a tournament happens when I need an official handicap I am ready.

In fact, many people prefer golfing alone because they believe it allows them to focus better, helping them shoot lower scores . However, golfing solo can be different than playing in a group. Here are a few things you should know.

What is the best thing about golfing by yourself?

One of the best things about golfing by yourself is the speed at which you can play. But exactly how long does it take to play a round of golf by yourself?

How to make your solo round of golf interesting?

This is a great way to make your solo round of golf interesting. By playing two balls, you’re able to have a mini competition with yourself. When doing this, I’ll often play two golf balls that are different colors so I won’t get them mixed up. This way, you can get two rounds in while only paying for one green fee!

How long does it take to play 18 holes of golf?

The average time to play 18 holes of golf alone is 3-4 hours when walking and 2-3 hours when riding in a cart. Can you play golf alone?

If it’s not too busy, most golf courses will let you play alone. However, if the course is busy or it’s a high-traffic time (like weekends and evenings) they will likely pair you up with another group to help open up more tee times. They do this because, from a business perspective, it makes a lot of sense.

Can you draw on every shot on the front nine?

One of the things I’ll often do is work on hitting a draw on every shot on the front nine and switch to a fade for the back nine. Yes, sometimes the shot might call for the opposite shape, but limiting yourself to either a draw or a fade each nine forces you to get creative.

I don't post solo rounds. I really try to obey all the rules. Last year I didn't have enough non-solo rounds to even have a handicap.

Darkfrog

I took the 3rd option. I kinda knew this was a rule, but kinda didn’t. I wasn’t super attentive to these things when I got back in to golf 3-4 years ago. I probably did this a quite a bit at the time, when I was playing a lot of solo twilight rounds.

Dwall4017

I went option 3......I post solo rounds, wasn’t aware this was a rule, but 90% of my rounds are solo. I did play by the rules or atleast the rules that I’m aware of and have learned on here and other forums......I may play 10 rounds a year with someone else and most of those are scramble tournaments.

bkuehn1952

Solo rounds being posted is less a problem than selective posting. Still, this thread is a good reminder to not post solo rounds.

hunterdog

I don’t post solo rounds. I used to play a fair amount of solo “rounds” but, honestly, almost always ended up practicing muffed shots, usually around the greens. Often I would jump around the course and omit holes or play the holes out of order. I guess I should refer to them as practice rounds and not solo rounds.

Dwall4017

So I understand the rule and I guess it holds people accountable to posting correctly, but there should be a better option.....maybe post only x number of solo rounds a year. If I only posted rounds played with someone that wasn’t in a tournament format, then I might post 2 rounds a year.

Yes…. You Have to Post Every Round of Golf You Play. We all can acknowledge that one of the cornerstone values of golf is honesty. …but then why do some golfers forget to allocate (or purposefully omit) penalty strokes and then go on to post an inaccurate score for their round? Some golfers even go as far as simply not posting a score ...

Now if they could only enforce all the weekend hacks giving each other mulligans...

mark m

It would be very hard to enforce - especially when the scores are away scores or scores posted through the internet. Would you have to produce an attested scorecard? (Cheaters are going to cheat.) Vanity caps and competitions: They can be a problem in 2 ways.

Here's a link to other Handicap Rules changes, although unless I'm mistaken, you can't review the precise wording in any of the Rule changes yet. http://www.usga.org/articles/2015/11/key-changes-to-handicap-system-for-2016.html I do question why there should be a difference between posting when playing alone vs.

BlackDiamondPar5

Terrible idea! The USGA needs to encourage the use of the GHIN, not discourage it by layering in red tape and distrust. We'd all be better served by the USGA directing their energies into making sure everyone that has a GHIN knows the basics of how to post, when to post, ESC, how to handle a skipped holes, partial rounds, posting season etc.

bazinky

In my opinion, people not turning in scores is a far bigger problem than people turning in bogus scores. Most of the "sandbaggers" in my area do it by selective posting.

dcmidnight

Once again the USGA is nibbling around the edges at these phantom issues like anchored putting and golfers posting solo rounds. Not dealing with the big picture issues like the fact that - at best - golf is a completely stagnant sport. Shouldn't they want more people to keep an index, not fewer? Shouldn't they be doing everything they can to encourage that and not *discourage* people from keeping on? So foolish..
