Why do OEMs use plastic tips?

My thought is that the OEMs use them to avoid an epoxy plug in an iron shaft tip, that may subsequently break off and rattle. With a graphite shaft, they may prevent a higher epoxy plug resulting in subsequent shaft tip breakage just above the hosel. I'll bet the OEMs can't count on their cut-and glue factory assemblers to not over do the epoxy on the tip and in the hosel. Training is probably pretty minimal. Sad, but most likely true. I've seen some very poorly assembled OEM builds.
