Drivable par-4 10th hole

Riv has a pretty great finishing hole (more on that in a minute) and a much-talked about donut-shaped green with a bunker in the middle (the 6th), but the 10th hole is perhaps the hole here.

The Flyover

A closer look at one of the 315-yard par-4 10th, one of golf’s most iconic holes. Defending champion Bubba Watson calls it “the most demanding par 4 I’ve ever played in my life.” The distance entices players to go for the green, but there is plenty of trouble, with bunkers guarding the left, the right and the back of a narrow green.

The Landing Zone

The 503-yard par-5 opening hole at Riviera ranked as the easiest hole on the PGA TOUR last season, playing to a stroke average of 4.186. A total of 38 eagles were produced last year against just seven bogeys. The elevated tee box is 75 feet above the fairway, offering breathtaking views.

Weather Check

The forecast is not good for Friday. There’s a 100 percent chance of rain, and the winds could be as strong as 25 mph. “Looks like we might catch some rough weather, at least Friday on,” said Jordan Spieth, winner of last week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which also had to deal with weather issues the first two days.

1.KEVIN HALL. The recipient of this year’s Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption is Hall, who lost his hearing when he was 2 years old because of H-Flu meningitis. The first African-American to play on a golf scholarship at Ohio State, the 34-year-old Hall is making his first start in a PGA TOUR event in 11 years.
