Affordable is a relative term. NOVA is one of the wealthiest areas of the country and $20-30k is a reasonable initiation fee for healthy (i.e. going/has been around a long time) in many areas of the country. I would image the top clubs/healthiest clubs in the area like RTJ, Washington GC, Army Navy, River Bend, etc.

I moved to NOVA 3 years ago and its a terrible golfing region. If you want to play golf in this area often and on a good course where you can play in 4 hours or less its going to cost you. You can join one of the clubs mentioned above but they are already jam packed or in the process of being leveled and turned into townhome communities.

One thing and it pains me to say this as a Virginian, if I still lived in the Washington DC area, I would maybe have to choose to live in MD because the quality of the private golf (and public) is generally better.
