Listening a noise when you shift into reverse is normal and connected to the gears and sprockets used in the gearbox. If, on the other hand, you have the feeling that your Volkswagen Golf reverse gear makes more noise than before, it is possible that filings have been created and are moving around in it. It is therefore time to empty the box.

Car making a squealing noise

When you’re driving, you might hear a high-pitched squealing noise that goes away when braking. This noise isn’t a problem itself, but is actually a warning noise used to indicate the potential for a brake problem.

Grinding noise in your brakes

If you miss the squealing noise, unfortunately the next noise you’ll hear is a grinding or growling noise when you brake and it’s quite a bit more serious of a problem. The grinding noise is caused by your vehicle’s brake pads being worn through and the brakes beginning to grind into the rotor. This noise is usually much louder and harder to miss.

Squeaking brakes

Another noise you may hear coming from your brakes is a squeaking noise that occurs when you stop. Luckily, this isn’t a very serious problem and doesn’t usually call for a replacement of your brakes. Rather, it’s a sign that your brakes were not installed correctly when they were changed. A possible cause is weak pads or unlubricated caliper.

Squeaky noise and reversing noise

Hi all I got a polo GTI back in October and recently there has a loud humming noise when reversing and a loud squeaky noise when turning or going over bumps like a really noisey spring bed and mattress. The VW dealership is closed so I cant get it looked at and I called the VW breakdown response team and they could not fix either issue they said the noise from suspension may be the bushes ? Any advice on what I can do and if I should still drive it ?.

Re: Squeaky noise and reversing noise

I never got offered an software update. I was simply told there is no fix or TPI (I think that was the acronym used) so I had the brakes pads cleaned

Re: Squeaky noise and reversing noise

Same here on my 18 gti, I find a very loud grinding sort of noise from the rear I think maybe front not too sure every time I put the car in reverse and press/let go of the brake pedal. Think my brothers 19 gti does it too but will double check.

Re: Squeaky noise and reversing noise

That’s frustrating that it’s not resolved yet. I’m hoping mine sing built would have been free of this but I’m expecting a cow When it’s finally delivered now

Re: Squeaky noise and reversing noise

Annoying as it is, I doubt VW see this as a priority if the car’s braking efficiency isn’t affected. That doesn’t make it right though. As has been mentioned in a separate thread on ‘mooing’ rear brakes, it’s not just a Polo GTI / GTI+ problem.

Why does my golf radio make a whining noise?

If your Golf’s stereo is making a whining noise, it is usually caused by a condition known as “alternator whine”. Alternator whine is a product of a drop in voltage between the radio and the alternator itself . It is usually way more noticeable on the A.M band of the radio. You’ll hear it match the acceleration of the vehicle.

Why does my golf car whine?

Your Golf’s serpentine belt is responsible for taking the motion from the crankshaft, and using it to turn all of your accessories. When it goes bad, it’ll cause a high pitched whine. This is particularly true when you first start the vehicle. There’s more on this in the whines while starting section directly below.

How to tell if power steering pump is out?

The pump can also go out. To determine if it is the power steering pump , turn the wheel left and right with the vehicle sitting. Does the sound get louder while turning? That’s a great indication that it is probably the power steering pump making noise. All of your engine accessories will change their wine depending upon the RPM. Only the power steering pump will change with RPM or the steering wheel.

Why does my alternator whine?

Alternator whine is almost always caused by a corrupted ground wire to the radio. Once a good ground is restored it should go away. Here is a great page with way more info on the subject.

What happens when a golf serpentine belt goes bad?

Your Golf’s serpentine belt turns all of the engine accessories. As they go bad, they begin to glaze and stretch. When a serpentine belt stretches, it doesn’t grip the accessories that it is turning as well. It’ll squeal until it grabs all the way. They are really affordable.

Can a radio make noise?

The radio can accept interference and cause noise when starting the vehicle. This is a great place to start, since it only takes a second. If this does stop the noise, there’s more on this directly below.
