Why is my VW Golf idling rough?
There are quite a few reasons why your Volkswagen Golf could be idling rough. An internal combustion engine needs air, fuel, and spark in order to achieve ignition. When one or more of these variables is off it can lead to a rough idling condition.
Is it normal for a car to idle rough in winter?
A bit of a rough idle is normal in colder weather. All cars do that, they idle about 200rpm faster to heat the engine up quicker. Has it been cold there?
Why does a diesel engine idle rough?
A super lean running engine will often idle rough. The fuel injection systems job is to atomize the fuel into fine mist. If a fuel injector has an issue with this process, it will either let too much or too little fuel into the combustion chamber relative to the amount of air.
Why does my carburetor idle rough in cold weather?
Older vehicles that use a carburetor instead of a fuel injector can have various problems that can affect the rough engine idle in cold weather. Black exhaust smoke is usually a strong indicator of an issue with the carburetor.

What causes rough idle when cold?
One of the most common causes of rough idle on a cold engine is a faulty ECT sensor. This sensor signals the car's computer when the engine's coolant is cold or hot, so the computer delivers more or less fuel to the engine. A cold engine requires more fuel than a warmed engine.
Why does my car idle rough when it first starts?
Many different problems could result in a rough idle for your car or truck, including: dirty fuel injectors, clogged air filters, bad spark plugs, and a variety of exhaust system issues. Let's go over each of these causes in more detail and learn how they can be remedied.
Why does my car idle rough when parked?
Low or high fuel pressure from a dirty fuel filter, defective fuel pump, clogged fuel tank strainer, bad fuel regulator or dirty/clogged fuel injectors can cause rough idling. Try replacing the fuel filter and add fuel injector cleaning treatment to your fuel tank to clean and hopefully unclog your injectors.

Is 29 degrees too cold for a car?
29 degrees is not very cold so you should not have any issues at that temp. Maybe you need a tune up and filter change. Try a good fuel system cleaner while you are at it.
Does a 2011 GTI need to be cleaned?
If you have the 2.0L turbo, at that mileage you probably need your intake valves cleaned. my 2011 GTI was misfiring badly on cold start at 110k or so. Took the intake apart and the valves were filthy with carbon. blasted them off with walnut shells and runs amazing still at 122k. If you have metric tools and a weekend give it a shot.
What causes a rough idle when cold?
Symptoms of a bad intake air temperature sensor that can cause a rough idle when cold is the engine stalling, the engine surging, the hard starting, the excessive fuel consumption, and the stumble and jerking while accelerating.
Why is my car idle so rough?
Sometimes the dirty parts that have accumulated debris in the engine of your car can also be the main cause of the rough idling engine. Fuel injectors disperse and transport fuel into your car’s engine at the right angle and in the right amount to fuel the car, ensuring optimal performance and presenting rough idle when cold.
How to tell if your engine is idling?
How your engine is idling is a good indicator of its overall health and how long it is going to last, meaning what if you address the problem quicker than you can save potential expensive repairs or replacements in the long run. You can tell your vehicle is having a rough idle when cold if there is shaking and bouncing.
Why does my engine idle so fast?
An engine that is doing a rough idle when cold can also be the result of faulty spark plugs or damaged spark plug wires. Spark plugs use the electrical current produced from the ignition coils to ignite the correct ratio of the air to fuel mixture within the combustion chamber in the engine. A plug that has become damaged over time or is installed incorrectly can result in the fuel being burned at an improper rate, either too fast or too slow for the combustion to take place.
What does it mean when your car is running rough idle?
In addition to the vibrations, you might also notice strange sounds when the car is running rough idle when cold.
Why does my car idle?
Car idles can happen due to various reasons, like carburetor issues, vacuum problems, poor valve seals, and many other reasons. We can help you narrow it down to the real cause and help you repair and fix the parts.
Why do cars have throttles?
Most newer cars and modern vehicles have a throttle that is designed to regulate engine speed and airflow through the system . This new modern car mechanism also creates a vacuum within the intake manifold. However, over time, these hoses can succumb to wear and tear and become damaged over time or develop a leak.

So my Golf R has been faultless since I bought it in May up until now. Half hour ago I started the car. The car started as expected but immediately I could feel a lumpy idle and the engine cut out. Very strange!

Could be fuel, injector issues (carbon build-up, stuck open etc), coil pack, plugs etc. A scan should hopefully give you some more info and possibly a fault code to help identify the issue.

When I had my last R it done something similar and when I scanned it there was a fault for a camshaft actuator.

Misfires is another cause of cold start rough idle, sometimes caused by plugs, sometimes by coil packs (sometimes both !) If there are any error codes they can often help point you in the right direction to solve the issue.

Issue I had was one of the camshaft actuators, but it sounds different to the OP’s issue if no error lights were illuminated. I was pulling up at a junction and got a few error lights, engine light and cruise control unavailable. Car was also misfiring and was in limp code. Car would be ok after restarting but eventually came back.

Why is my Jetta idling?
There are quite a few reasons why your Volkswagen Jetta could be idling rough. An internal combustion engine needs air, fuel, and spark in order to achieve ignition. When one or more of these variables is off it can lead to a rough idling condition.
Why is my Jetta running so lean?
The heat of the exhaust can also bake the wiring going to/from them over time. If an oxygen sensor goes bad, it can make your Jetta run too lean (or rich). A super lean running engine will often idle rough.
What happens if a Jetta coil pack goes bad?
If a coil pack goes bad, it’ll cause a misfire and rough idle condition. Really, your Jetta will be running rougher at any RPM, but a misfire will be most pronounced at idle.
What is the oxygen sensor on a Volkswagen Jetta?
The oxygen sensors that are equipped in your Volkswagen Jetta are responsible for monitoring the exhaust to help the ECU determine the correct air/fuel mixture. Of all the sensors equipped in your vehicle, the O2 sensors may have it the hardest.
Why does my fuel injector go bad?
If a fuel injector has an issue with this process, it will either let too much or too little fuel into the combustion chamber relative to the amount of air. There are many reasons why a fuel injector may go bad, as well as different symptoms relative to how they went bad. For more, check out Volkswagen Jetta bad fuel injector symptoms.
Why is my check engine light not on?
In fact, if your check engine light isn’t on at all, checking out the air filter would be a great place to start. It’s readily accessible, often the problem, and super cheap and easy to replace.
Does a Jetta run rough at idle?
Really, your Jetta will be running rougher at any RPM, but a misfire will be most pronounced at idle. Spark Plug Wires – While not every model and engine combination of vehicles today comes with spark plug wires (a lot are now coil on plug), if your Jetta happens to have them, they can go bad and cause a rough idle.
