Golf Ball FAQs

A: Finding the right golf ball for you will depend on how much you are willing to spend, as well as how many balls you lose during a round of golf.

1. 2021 Titleist Pro V1

It’s a hard reality that professional players on the PGA Tour play golf balls that the average recreational enthusiast simply cannot acquire. The top combatants on the tournament circuit receive bespoke balls made to their exact specifications and delivered to them by their sponsors.

2. Mizuno RB 566V

Not every player can lay a drive out 300 yards or more; however, those folks can get some legal distance help if they pick the right golf ball. Released for 2020, the Mizuno RB 566V is still one of our top picks for 2022, employing its titular 566 micro-dimples arranged all around its surface to reduce aerodynamic drag and optimize spin rate.

3. Callaway Chrome Soft X

When reviewing the best golf balls of 2022, there were a lot of high-quality Callaway balls to consider. We ultimately selected the new Callaway Chrome Soft for the incredible distance it provides. All good golf balls work due to compression. Put simply, the golf club strikes the ball for about 1/300th of a second.

4. Vice Pro Soft Golf Balls

Vice Golf doesn’t have the longstanding reputation of Callaway or the high-tech reputation of Mizuno, but this newcomer to the golf scene is already making some of our favorite balls.

5. TaylorMade TP5X

Hyped up by TaylorMade for its “complete performance,” the 2021 TP5X uses a new dimple pattern to improve ball flight and five-layer construction to provide a soft feel. When you see a golf ball described as “soft,” that doesn’t mean it’s a stress toy or something a dog chews on when it’s bored. It means the ball is designed to land and grab.

6. Honma D1

You won’t find a lot of these on the course. They’re a little more on the exotic side, just like the elite clubs that carry the same brand name Honma makes some of the finest and most expensive golf clubs in the world. When it comes to their golf balls, multilevel construction and a 326-dimple design make for refined performance.

7. Srixon Q-Star Tour 3

If a hacker isn’t the best with the blade out on the greens, it’s best to stop the ball closer to the hole. It’s easier to avoid three-putts if the ball lands nearer to the cup or rotates back toward the pin. The Srixon Q-Star Tour 3 wraps itself in a “Spin Skin” with SeRM (Srixon’s urethane coating with flexible molecular bonds).

About the 2021 Golf Ball Test

The 2021 MyGolfSpy ball test was conducted at Scottsdale National Golf Club. Testing took place over five days and included nearly 60 hours of test time. In total, the robot hit just under 4,500 shots. We tested 37 golf ball models (35 of the most popular urethane offerings, refurbished golf balls and Pinnacle range balls).

Key Findings

As we found during our 2019 Golf Ball Test, there is an absolute correlation between compression and ball speed but there are conditions under which softer balls can keep up with firmer balls. For slower players (sub-85 mph), the speed differences are so small that there’s a case to be made for not worrying about it.

HIGH SWING SPEED RESULTS

Low Spin – Snell MTB-X, Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash, Vice Pro Plus Higher Spin – Callaway Chrome Soft X, Titleist Pro V1x, Wilson Staff Model Balanced Performance – Snell MTB Black, TaylorMade TP5x, Titleist Pro V1

MID SWING SPEED RESULTS

Low Spin – Bridgestone Tour B X, Srixon Z-Star XV, Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash Higher Spin – TaylorMade TP5, Titleist Pro V1x, Wilson Staff Model Balanced Performance – Bridgestone Tour BX, Snell MTB Black, Titleist Pro V1

SLOW SWING SPEED RESULTS

Low Spin – Bridgestone Tour B RX, TaylorMade Tour Response, Titleist AVX Higher Spin – Callaway Chrome Soft X, Titleist Pro V1x, Wilson Staff Model Balanced Performance – Bridgestone Tour B XS, TaylorMade TP5x, Titleist Pro V1

Ball Speed Versus Compression

We’ve discussed that there is a strong correlation between ball speed and compression (the firmness of a golf ball). When the collision between club and ball occurs at high speed as it does with a driver, a softer ball is a slower ball.
