I went to a practice round at Congressional in 2011. It was awesome. watched the range for a while, posted up on a bunch of different tee boxes and watched them hit multiple balls, really relaxing and productive day. Not very crowded and the mood was much more relaxed.

If you can only go one day, than I would definitely go to a practice round. That way your almost guaranteed to see your favourite players, have a little smaller crowds & enjoy the day a little more without having to scramble to find a good viewing spot.

For a major other than Masters, I'd say practice round or Thursday. I hate crowds. They are usually full of stoopid people with no manners.

My vote is for the practice rounds. Went to Pinehurst last year and had a really good time. Easier to get around tee boxes to get better views, players spend more time on the range than just doing warm-ups, and cameras are allowed.
