Welcome to our news series, Club Building 101. As with everything we do at Plugged In Golf, our goal is to bring you the best information in a clear, easy to digest format.

The Process

Step 1: Removing the old grip . If you’re gripping a clean shaft, please skip to Step 3. To remove the old grip, insert your knife – preferably a hook blade – at the bottom of the grip and cut toward the grip cap. Always cut away from yourself! It is much safer to put the club in a vise before cutting the grip.

Alternate Methods

Grips can be installed with an air compressor and grip attachment. Nick does not recommend this for most grips, citing PURE Grips as the one exception.

Common Mistakes

Nick highlighted four common mistakes. First – shockingly – is using gasoline as a solvent. This is obviously very dangerous.

Pro Tips

If you’re installing a grip on a shaft without a club head, stick an awl or small screwdriver through the hole in the butt cap once the grip is on. This will punch a hole in the tape and prevent any issues when installing the head.

Nalajr

In the middle of taking a couple grips off to change them I forgot that I don't have any more lighter fluid that I normally use. I searched for alternatives that I might have around to use. The only one on the list that I know I have is one that I have never heard of before and can't imagine it working even if I did have some.

Nalajr

I don't have any of the water activated tape....I'm using the reguar tape that needs solvent. That's what is unusual about using the soap and water....where's the SOLVENT come in at? Nalajr

deck

I use it when I install grips using an air compressor. Never heard of it being used any other ways

Froth

I blow grips on with air, Blue painters tape for buildup if you want it. I will never do it any other way, unless a specialty grip requires Solvent/Tape.

Nessism

Paint thinner is mineral spirits. Basically the same thing as grip solvent. Get the odorless type and recycle the stuff during gripping. A quart will last you a long time. If you can get the grips on using soapy water as a lubricant, I can't see anything wrong per say.

ptjn1201

I've never tried it but my father used to use dish soap from time to time -- it takes longer to dry, but 36 hours and you should be good to go.

Nessism

If anyone uses this technique know that the soap will never evaporate. Use too much and the grips will likely slip since the soap acts like a lubricant. Bad idea overall. Get some mineral spirits or similar and install the grips properly.

How to apply grip tape solvent?

The best way to apply grip tape solvent is to add it to the inside of the grip first. Then, swish it around so it covers the inside completely (the guys in the videos I’ve linked to above both do this, so don’t miss it), then drizzle the solvent out of the grip over the grip tape. This both applies solvent to the grip and grip tape, and actually reduces the amount of solvent you use. And prevents the dreaded half-stick grip which almost always means you have to cut it off and start again with a new grip.

How much does it cost to regrip a golf club?

Some of the tools you'll need to regrip your clubs. Regripping your clubs can be expensive. Most clubfitters charge somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 to $3 to regrip each club, which is a pretty good payday for what takes probably 2-3 minutes per club to do.

What are Tour Velvet Plus 4 grips?

As you can see by the photo, I’m installing Golf Pride’s Tour Velvet Plus 4 grips onto my irons. These grips are called “Plus 4” because the lower hand region of the grip is built thicker to feel as though there are four wraps of tape underneath. Depending on what your preference is, you may want one or several layers of tape under your grips, either on the whole grip or the upper or lower areas. For me, even though I’m using midsized Tour Velvet Plus 4s, I still want two layers of tape under the whole grip.

Is grip tape toxic?

Just be sure to apply it the full length of your grip, and cover the butt end completely. Grip solvent is the right choice, and generally is non-toxic and works well enough. Ryan Noll.

Lord Helmet

I've never used that, but a couple days ago I ran out of solvent and Google'd substitutes as I couldn't get to galaxy anytime soon. One of the suggestion was wd40. I ended up with odorless mineral spirits that I picked up from Wal-Mart. Never thought about wd40 but if it works then why not!?

HackerD

WD40 contains lubricant that does not evaporate, so in theory not ideal for grip application. Also highly flammable.

kckershovel

I disagree with the lubricant argument. We would use wd40 to put out bmx grips on bare chrome steel handlebars. We did this because it would glue the rubber grip to the bar. Never any slip and stuck tight in minuets. So much better than hairspray that took forever to dry.

BIG STU

I've always used WD40. A lot of the old timers used lighter fluid, before Bic lighters became popular.

Nessism

Using WD-40 on grips reminds me of guys using shafting beads all the time. Guys training for a darwin award were granted a pardon.

HackerD

Fascinating... WD40 publishes a list of over 2000 uses of WD40, including 28 that are golf-related. Including removing dead insects from golf carts, or spraying on golf glove to keep it from drying out. But none of the 28 are related to installing grips. Kinda funny.

Nixhex524

I use painters tape and just a tiny spray of wd40 with my golf pride tour wraps and never have an issue...
