What is a metal disc clutch?

What’s more, they’re preferable for lightweight vehicles prone to clutch chatter. The Kevlar/Metal discs are designed for high horsepower, drag racing or street performance where “grab” is the name of the game. These are typically considered an “on/off” clutch. You cannot “feather” them for smooth street driving.

What is the purpose of a clutch?

The clutch’s primary task is to transmit power from the engine’s crankshaft to the transmission smoothly and firmly without slippage. Some slippage is important for smooth engagement, yet without excessive slippage that will cause unnecessary wear and heat issues.

What is the advantage of a diaphragm clutch?

The advantage of a diaphragm clutch is greater clamping power than a conventional three- finger Long style clutch yet without high pedal effort. What’s more, as diaphragm clutch discs wear clamping power increases over the life of the clutch, which improves clutch performance.

Is Superior clutch good?

Drive

The drive, or primary, clutch is found on the crankshaft of the engine. A thick, heavy ‘drive’ belt is wrapped around it and links it to the driven clutch, on the differential. At rest, the drive clutch sheaves (or pulley halves) are separated enough that the drive belt rests in between the sheaves & against the center shaft of this clutch.

Driven

The other half of this system is the driven, or secondary, clutch. At rest the driven clutch sheaves are spring loaded together, so the belt sits up at the outer edge of this clutch, NOT down toward the center shaft. It, too, spins around and has a sheave that sides in & out along it’s main shaft but this clutch has no flyweights.

Belt Operation

As the drive belt forces the driven clutch sheaves to separate, the PULLING ratio of the engine changes from maximum (when the belt is at the outer edge of the driven unit) to minimum PULLING power, or top cruising speed (when the sheaves are completely apart).

Driven Issues

The driven clutch can misbehave in many ways. It has one main shaft and the sliding sheave has an internal bushing that will wear, and it has several inclined metal ramps (usually aluminum) with small plastic buttons that protect the ramps as they glide against one another.

Buttons

OK picture this: The engine revs up and the drive belt starts to ride down into the pulley faces of the driven clutch forcing them to separate. The inboard pulley half begins to slide along the main shaft compressing the spring and bringing the funky cup ends and their respective ramps up against one another.

Driven Spring

While we are on the Yamaha driven clutch another failure that occurs is almost impossible to detect but it also impairs the hill pulling power of the car. Keep looking inboard to where the funky spring cap butts up against the differential housing. The spring cap doesn’t actually touch the differential case.

How to readjust self adjusting clutch?

Remember to readjust the "self adjusting" clutch by lifting the clutch pedal with your foot after you replace the clip. Bleed the clutch to rid the hydraulic system of any air bubbles.

How to adjust clutch free play?

What happens if the clutch cable is cracked on a VW Jetta?

It's a simple adjustment, and inexpensive, but can save you big bucks in the long run. If the reservoir is cracked, it could be leaking as well as introducing air into the hydraulic system. Replace it, and your clutch should return back to normal. Adjust the clutch cable should you have that capacity in your VW Jetta.

Why do you use a clutch?

You can use the clutch to decelerate, lower the torque to the wheels, accelerate at higher rpm and even kill the engine. The whole system hinges on a clutch, which you use to change gears in the transmission and keep them from grinding each other during the speeding up and slowing down process of driving.

How to test free play pedal?

The free play is the first easy movement in the pedal and you can test it by pushing the pedal with your finger. In contrast, you will probably need to use your whole hand to disengage the clutch and push the pedal the rest of the way to the floor.
