What Is Compression?

The first thing to do before choosing the proper compression is to understand exactly what compression means. This word gets thrown around a lot, but most golfers don’t understand its purpose.

How To Choose Compression?

To choose the correct compression, you must evaluate your game honestly first. Knowing how you swing the club and your strengths and weaknesses will determine the best compression for you.

Which Companies Focus On Compression?

Just like golf clubs, some companies place more importance on compression than others. Everyone researches differently and sees the game from a different view. This is the beauty (and the frustrating) part of the game.

So Which Compression Is Best For You?

Just like choosing clubs, the best way to find the right ball for you will be to test a few of them out. Use a high compression ball for a whole round, then use a low compression ball for the next. Taking a ball on the course is an accurate measure to see if it suits you or not.

Other Factors To Consider When Choosing a Ball

Compression is not the only thing to consider when choosing a ball. There is a lot of science that goes into making a ball so that you can find one that compliments your playing style over your entire game.

Conclusion

Some companies choose not to acknowledge compression, but we think it should at least be considered, especially if you are a more skilled player looking to get your ball flight as optimized as possible.

First of all, I would like to note that I can't get fitted, there's no fitter around here.

tjumper78

thats about my distance. i used to play dgs300 on mizuno mx300, and now i play srixon i-506 with rifle 5.0 trimmed to firm flex. if im not mistaken, rifle 5.0 is sorta like regular flex or maybe between regular and stiff. i hit them the similar distance but get more height with rifle 5.0. i also get better spin with the latter. not sure if it's the club heads or the shafts or the combination of both. i really cant feel the difference..

kwooten31

I have a medium tempo, with a fast transition and late release and usually play stiff flex or a 5.5 PX or a 6.0 PX ss 1x. But I also like a more active tip and generally play a bit softer shaft, it all depends on what you like and what works for your swing. Edit: forgot to add, I'm about a club longer with my 8 iron at 155 yards.

I'm not sure how these SteelFiber frequency out to, but a few months ago I tried Recoil F4 (stiff) that frequencied out to 5.0 and they felt really stiff to me, I ended up building those for my friend's irons and a few days ago I hit his clubs and they felt kind of soft. I only started playing for almost a year and just recently my swing is kind of straighten out, more consistent, I'm getting really good dispersion (to me) and I'm really enjoying go out to the course - I'm also starting to be able to feel the club more..

Nessism

You can't judge iron distance based on the number on the bottom because different heads have wildly different loft numbers.

Blakester

Check out Dynamic Gold's website. They have an online shaft fit program that may be able to give you a starting point. KBS has one, too. My driver SS is 98-103 and I hit my 8-iron right at 150. Always played DG S300. Did the Mizuno shaft optimizer and it put me in DG XP S300, Project X PXi 6.0 or KBS Tour Stiff due to my low ball flight.

CallawayKid86

These are a great starting point. Just know that shafts could play wildly different in different iron heads if you do not swing weight them to match. I took some PX 7.0 from my 710 cb irons and they played like rebar in my tm 300 irons.
