You might get confused when you read the specification on an iron club set. But here is an easy way to know what you are getting in that set. When you see 3-PW written on the set, then it essentially means you would get from 3 iron to 9 iron along with a pitching wedge. So same goes for 4-PW which means all clubs from 4 iron all included. 5. Wedges

What is the difference between Fairway woods and hybrid golf clubs?
Sep 09, 2013 · Posted September 8, 2013. Just watch your lofts. 5w lofts are typically 18-19 so a 20-21 hybrid would be good paired with a 23-24 and then irons. Also watch your gaps with the wedges. I just picked up new irons and the pw is 2* stronger than my old set so my 54 is being bent to 52 to keep my gaps.

Why are golf clubs called irons?
The golf clubs called irons are so-called because their clubheads are made of metal. Of course, "woods" are now also made of metal, but that's a relatively recent development. Irons have featured metal clubheads (steel, these days) for centuries. The clubheads of irons are thin from front to back, and the clubfaces are grooved to impart spin on ...

Why is a shorter shaft better?
A shorter shaft makes a club easier to control in the swing (think of baseball where a batter will " choke up " on the bat—essentially, shorten the bat—when he's simply trying to make contact rather than swing for the fences). More loft helps get the ball airborne and adds a little more control to the shot.

Make sure your lofts aren't overlapping with the hybrids and 5w. Check all your lofts through the set. This will give you an idea of where you are with your set. I play a 10.5* driver, 19* hybrid, 22* hybrid, 5i-PW, 50.5*, 57.5*.I'd like my wedges to be , PW, 50, 56 and 60 with a spot open for a 4w.

I more wondering whats the longest iron you buy in your irons sets? Also I was curious if you buy the pitching wedges from the same set or do you just go like 3-9 irons and 4 wedges from cleveland or vokey?

Back when I started playing, every set I got was 3-P, as I got better, I went to 4-P and added a 3Hy, depending on the course I play the same PW from the set (Callaway prototype 46*) or replace it with a Cleveland 588 RTX 46* (I play 4 wedges, 46, 50, 54, 58)...

2 - PW#N#My PW is 48*. I carry a Vokey 52* SW and a Vokey 56* lob wedge. The remainder of my set includes a 9.5* driver, a 15* three-wood, and of course a putter.#N#I normally do not carry a hybrid. However, there are some courses and or course conditions that will cause me to leave the 2-iron in my locker and swap it out with a 19* hybrid.

In the late 20th century, as more specialization entered golf, golf companies began making additional wedges. Today, the other two wedges that are common are:
What is a wedge in golf?
Wedges are the highest-lofted clubs in a set of golf clubs, designed for short approach shots (for most golfers, 120 yards and in), strokes played out of sand, chip shots and pitch shots, and generally any shot for which the golfer wants the ball to ascend and descend sharply.
What are the different types of wedges?
In the late 20th century, as more specialization entered golf, golf companies began making additional wedges. Today, the other two wedges that are common are: 1 Gap wedge: So-named because it falls in-between the pitching wedge and sand wedge in loft. The gap wedge has more loft than a PW, less loft than a SW. 2 Lob wedge: Usually the highest-lofted club a golfer will carry. The lob wedge creates a very steep angle of ascent and descent, for shots that must get up very quickly (perhaps, for example, to get over a tree) and for shots that you want to hit the green with a minimum of roll.
Is a wedge a golf club?
Wedges are also irons, but golfers think of wedges as a sub-set of irons, or as specialized irons. They are often thought of as their own category of golf clubs, in other words. From the 1930s forward, up until the latter part of the 20th century, it was common for even the best golfers to carry only two wedges:
What is a 60 degree wedge?
Wedges feature the shortest shafts and highest lofts of any golf clubs. In fact, wedges are often identified by their loft rather than their name. A lob wedge might instead be called a "60-degree wedge," for example. Sand wedges were invented (generally credited to Gene Sarazen) to make shots out of sand bunkers easier.
How many degrees are sand wedges?
Typically, sand wedges have lots from 52 to 56 degrees. As lofts on irons have decreased over time (e.g., a 5-iron today might be lofted at 26 degrees, whereas 30 years ago a 5-iron would have been lofted at 32 degrees), it has become more popular to carry additional wedges.
What is the loft of a lob wedge?
A typical lob wedge might have a loft of 60 degrees to 64 degrees. As its name implies, a lob wedge allows a player to "lob" the ball high into the air, from where it will drop steeply down onto the green, with little or no roll. With pitching wedges typically lofted from 42 to 46 degrees, the gap wedge is so-called because it closes ...

Purchasing a new set of Callaway X-20's and wanted to know which configuration makes more sense? I plan on also purchasing a Driver and 5W but would have nothing between 5W and 4I.

custom order your set and take away the 3 iron... save you some cash. then pick up a hybrid, which loft depends on what you realistically seeing yourself needing... ie what you are comfortable hitting, whether your intention is to take the club off the tee or off the deck.
putterboy
I also got a hybrid to replace the 3 iron. For most the hybrid is a lot easier to hit than the long irons.....suggest you test out the hybrid and a 3 iron and see which feels more natural or comfortable and go with that
norcalgolf
Definitely try the SW from the set and see if it is one you want to use, if not then if you don't want a 3 iron, just order 4-PW or 5-PW.

I had a hybrid for 6 months before giving it to my wife. Could not stop hooking it and now have a 3 iron back in the bag and can hit it low, long and straight almost every time.

Most golfers use clubhead covers to protect their driver and fairway woods from damage sustained in their golf bag. These covers are always marked with corresponding numbers so that even when a clubhead is covered, you can still identify the club with ease.

What is the pitching loft of a wedge?
Pitching Wedge loft. A pitching wedge loft is usually between 45-47 degrees, with most golfers using one that comes with their iron set. However, better players like to use a traditional wedge instead of the one that comes with the set to help with control and spin.
What is the degree of loft in golf?
The degree of loft on golf clubs helps separate them from each other as the loft influences the flight and distance of shots. A lower loft hits the ball further whilst a higher loft launches the ball up into the air with more spin. There really are no set lofts of golf clubs these days, with manufacturers bringing out clubs at all different lofts ...

How many clubs can you put in a golf bag?

What are the two types of irons?
Irons (3-PW): There are two main types of irons, the cavity back and blade. These two types of irons offer different level of players different things. The blades offer high shot making ability to skilled players but have low tolerances for mis-hits.

Set Composition
Loft, Length, and Distance
- As you go through the set, from the 3-iron to the pitching wedge, each iron has a little more loft than the previous, and a little shorter shaft length than the previous, so each club (going from 3-iron to PW) hits the golf ball a little less distance than the previous. That is, a 5-iron has more loft, a shorter shaft, and produces shorter shots than the 4-iron; the 4-iron has more loft, a shorter sh…
Long, Mid-, and Short Irons
- Irons are generally categorized as long irons, mid-irons , and short irons. Long irons are the 2-, 3- ,and 4-irons; mid-irons, the 5-, 6-, and 7-irons; short irons, the 8- and 9-irons and pitching wedge. (Two-irons are becoming obsolete and are exceedingly rare for recreational golfers. Because of this, some sources now count the 5-iron as one of the long irons. We still classify it as a mid-iron…
Distances
- Learning your distances—how far you hit each club—is much more important than trying to hit each club to some predetermined "correct" yardage. There is no "right" distance for each club, there is only your distance. That said, a typical male recreational golfer might hit a 4-, 5-, or 6- iron from 150 yards, while a typical female might use a 3-wood, 5-wood, or 3-iron from that distance. …
Hitting
- Irons can be played from the teeing ground, using a golf tee, and it is often appropriate to do so. On a par-3 hole, for example, you will probably use an iron on your tee shot. Or you might use an iron off any (or even every) tee in order to have better control over the shot. But most of your iron shots will come from the fairway. Irons are designed with divots in mind. That's why they have a …
