I ditched my 15* 3 wood a few years ago and have alternated between an 18* 5 wood and a 16-17* 4 Wood or a HL 3 wood. The difference is the head of the HL3 is slightly bigger than the 5 wood. As far as ease of play, I found no difference and of course the 3HL goes a bit lower and farther which is what I need.

Get you a 5W head and decrease the loft to 16-16.5* and turn it into a 4 Wood. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the forgiveness and distance you get out of it with the shorter shaft

For me it comes down to what my yardage needs are. I myself use a 15* 3 wood and 19* 5 wood. If I felt I needed something in between than a 17* "whatever" would likely work.
