Why do clubs get shorter?

As the clubs get shorter the shafts get heavier, the idea being to help create a smoother transition in overall feel . With a constant weight set you are relying exclusively on increasing club head weight as the irons get shorter to maintain standard swing weight, but since swing weight does not take in to account the static weight of the club you end up with a club that continues getting heavier with all that extra weight being all the way down at the head. This is why the long irons in most standard off the rack sets can feel light for some people when compared to the shorter irons. By increasing the weight of the shaft as the club gets shorter you distribute some of the necessary added weight throughout the club instead of being concentrated in the head. Ping uses "Custom Tuning Ports" to fine tune the weight of each head so I imagine they may choose to weight the heads fitted with AWT shafts differently to compensate for this.
