Could someone please explain the difference to me between a 3 HL fairway wood and a 4 wood? They're both 17* ... so what's the difference? Volume? Shaft length?

9ccat9

Average people just feel better calling it a 3 vs 4. Even if there swing speed may not be fast enough to get a standard 3w into the air. The extra 2* makes a big difference. Win/Win they feel better and TM sells lots of clubs!

I imagine a HL also had a bigger volume head than a 4W -- more confidence and forgiveness?

Johnny T

I'm with WVP, a marketing strategy. There seems to be a stigma associated with not playing a 3 wood so this solves it, even though it is really just a 4 wood.

pingfool

numbers on bottom of club should be irrelevant how far you hit them? - is the pertinent question

Fade to Black

I don't care about distance. I just noticed on the TM website that both the 3W and 3HL were same size head and length and SW. Only 2* different. I would expect a 4W to have shorter length and smaller head size. BTW...notice the RBZ 3W are 197cc..whereas the RBZ Tours and Stage 2 3W are all around 170ish.

Not a huge TMAG fan here either, however, slower swing speeds demand added loft and in some ways TMAG ought to be congratulated for helping the average or slower than average swing. For some golfers, a HL 17 might actually carry further than their driver. Driver swing speeds of less than 85mph would be better suited to a 4 wood and 7 wood combination than a 3 and 5 wood combination.
