How much power does a G60 supercharger have?

Power potential ranges from the standard 160bhp to around 300bhp if your pockets are deep enough, however, there's plenty involved to get a reliable 200bhp including a stage 4 supercharger, bigger injectors, and a remapped ECU. Those with a penchant for masochism might consider a 16v G60 setup, but that’s something only the most determined enthusiast would really consider given the financial implications. You’ll need a cable change gearbox, hydro clutch, and a CE2 fuse board to make this swap much easier. Should you be keen to find out more speak to our friends at John Mitchell Racing who have carried out plenty of G60 and G60 16v swaps.

How much horsepower can a 16V engine make?

Splash out on throttle bodies, high lift cams flowed head, and high compression pistons and you should be on course for 180 – 200 + HP with a 7600+rpm redline. Upwards of 200 horsepower from a 2.0 16v setup is possible, but the expense of doing so means the 20vt becomes even more appealing, particularly as the process is almost as simple. There are also plenty of owners who have used the 16v engine as a base for a forced induction build, like John Mitchell's 575bhp 4WD Corrado. Potential engine donors for the 16v swap include Mk2 and Mk3 Golf, Seat Ibiza, Seat Cordoba, Seat Toledo, Corrado, Audi 80, and 90.

What is a 1.9 TDI?

Despite losing some public support after the emissions scandal, the 1.9 TDI is a torquey and fuel-efficient contender for your early VW engine swap. If you are searching for a powerplant to stand out, pin you to your seat and still return 40mpg this could be for you. Available with 110, 115, 130, and 150 hp variants in models including the Mk4 Golf, Bora, Passat, Leon, Octavia, A4, and A6, they feel a lot quicker than you'd expect, especially when bolted into much lighter bodyshells. Unless you pull apart a pricey 'one lady owner' example you will need to accept a high mileage engine in the front of your donor vehicle, but with the correct maintenance schedule adhered to, they will go on forever. Tuning potential is also massive with the PD engine. Larger turbos, bigger PD injectors, uprated intercoolers and free-flowing exhausts can easily put you on a 200+hp and 350ft.lbs journey. The engine mounts are the same as the 1.8T swap, you'll also want a front mount intercooler, 100mm driveshafts (gearbox dependant) and a custom spliced CE1 or adapted CE2 wiring loom. This transplant results in a deceptively rapid car, but the lack of revs tends to make them less exciting than rev-happy petrol alternatives. 350-400bhp is possible should you really want it but expect lots of black smoke and a hefty bill. For us, the PD swap is much more about effortless cruising than winning races. For more diesel tuning inspiration check out Darkside Developments.

What is the engine in a 1997 Mk4 Golf?

When it was announced in November 1997, the Mk4 Golf range included a three and five-door hatch with 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 GTi, 1.8 Turbo GTi petrol engines and 1.9 diesels in SDi and TDi format. Initially, the old convertible and estate from the Mk3 range continued in production until the following year. In July 1998, the Golf Mk4 convertible was announced using a Mk3 body with the new nose, a refreshed tail end as well as a revised interior. The 2.0-litre GTI was added to the range in March 1999 and by August, an estate Golf was available with the option of either a 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0-litre petrol engines or the 1.9 TDi or SDi diesel. Later that year Pompe Duse (PD) technology appeared, with the 1.9 version now producing 115bhp. In 1999 the booted Bora (or Jetta Mk4 in the US) came on the scene. With a distinctive front end, I personally think it has aged brilliantly - I did own one for quite a few years. A favourite with Sales Reps and Sunday drivers they're split into a two main camps when it comes to the classifieds. Low mileage, typically petrol engine automatics in burgundy and gold. Higher mileage TDI models in shades of silver, black and blue. You can't be too picky on colour, as unlike Golfs they aren't everywhere, but they are a great car with huge luggage space. In early 2000 the 2.8-litre V6 4-Motion arrived and in December the range was graced by the equally potent 2.3-litre V5. For those keen on fuel economy, with a decent helping of torque June 2001 saw the introduction of a feisty 130bhp version of the PD engine. Arguably the cream of the crop, especially from an investment point of view is the 4 wheel drive R32 with its 3.2 V6 engine, producing 238bhp. At the time it was the most powerful VW ever produced. For reference, the black 5 door Golf in our photos is a 1.9 TDI model.

When was the Mk4 Golf released?

The Mk4 Golf model history. Initially, the old convertible and estate from the Mk3 range continued in production until the following year.

What are the underpinnings on a Mk4?

Golf Mk4 underpinnings are strong and dependable, so simply carry out the usual checks when buying. Broken coil springs, worn wishbone bushes or anti-roll bar links are all par for the course on older cars but replacement Mk4 Golf suspension parts are inexpensive. Incidentally, the ARBs were originally plastic but have since been replaced by sturdier metal items. The rear axle bushes wear with age and can make the rear end wander whilst driving. You can often hear them knocking as they move around over bumps and through corners. Allow for a 3-4 hour job at your workshop of choice, as you need to cut out the old bushes the press in the new ones with a special tool. Some Technicians will suggest fitting a polyurethane upgrade at this stage in the vehicles life.

When did the GTI 2.0 come out?

The 2.0-litre GTI was added to the range in March 1999 and by August, an estate Golf was available with the option of either a 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0-litre petrol engines or the 1.9 TDi or SDi diesel. Later that year Pompe Duse (PD) technology appeared, with the 1.9 version now producing 115bhp.

Is the Mk4 a diesel?

The Mk4 Golf range really championed the diesel engine and there's always a strong demand for a decent 1.9 TDI, including the GTI styled GT TDI. We wouldn’t bother with the 90bhp version, but the 110 and 115 are pokey enough.

Does the Mk4 rust?

The Mk4 Golf doesn't rust badly, especially in comparison with the earlier versions. However, localised spots on the wings, sills, doors and tailgate are commonplace. Of course, a cursory glance underneath will help put chassis corrosion concerns to bed.

Is the Mk4 a good golf driver?

Whether you're after an older daily driver or a modern classic project to tinker with, the Golf Mk4 makes a lot of sense. It looks smart and retains that solid feel that is so familiar to Golf owners, with the benefit of some really good engine options. Mk4 Golf parts are cheap to buy and as far as tinkering possibilities – the sky really is the limit.

My dad has a T4 with a 2.4d in it. Its really slow and he's looking to change it.

rubjonny Administrator Staff Member Admin

most 4 cyl engiens go, main difficulty is the angle the engien sits at. the sump can be swapped over which is the main thing and the box uses std bolt pattern so it'll go on pretty much anything. i believe its 02a based? if so can use 02a box internals tyo change ratios I assume.

Stu Forum Junkie

Have you looked at turbo'ing the original 2.4D rather than swapping out the engine? It's a relatively common upgrade (assuming original engine in good order) if you have a look over on the T4 Forum, lots of info there. A higher 5th gear is a good upgrade too

Collie Forum Junkie

or even easier sell it and but one thats already turbo'd from the factory?

Prawn Forum Member

I believe Phil Miller of Millers Motor Services in Launceston has done quite a few conversions using the 90 and 110bhp 1.9Tdi mk4 lumps into T4's. He's also done a few PD130's too I think. he might be a good person to speak to. Search for Millers Motor Services on facebook.

Best option as above is to turbo the 2.4 lump,I believe you use the 2.5tdi turbo and manifold etc and it's very straightforward

I'm no expert but I thought cars can take a range of RON fuels as the engine management system adjusts the timing accordingly?

eatmysmoke

Your car should run fine on both. To prove it to them it should say what fuel to use in the handbook.

R32North

Your car will be optimised for 95RON. It will run on both and you shouldn't notice any difference between the 2.

vwgolfman

I have been out in my car today with the senior technician at the dealership. I wanted him to experience what I am. However, he backs up what the service manager has told me; that I should be using Shell Optimax as it will cure all of my problems!

vwgolfman

Well, I waited until my fuel was rather low and then pumped a full tank of Shell V-Power into it.
