How far does a golf ball fly in the wind?

Unfortunately, there is not a simple equation such as “1 mph equals 1 yard” that golfers can use to calculate how far the ball will fly in the wind. Different clubs, due to their different launch conditions and different ball flight, will be affected differently. A headwind hurts more than a tailwind helps.

Why do golf balls hit the ground faster in the wind?

Because the downwind was reducing the amount of drag the golf ball was experiencing, the ball was hitting the ground faster and at a flatter angle. The following is an example of a PGA and LPGA Tour 6-iron shot under different wind conditions.

How do you get to the ball last in golf swing?

From the start of the downswing, the sequence of body core rotation releases power from the legs to the hips to the core and shoulders, and the arms, hands and golf club are the “followers”, getting to the ball last.

Do different golf clubs react differently to different types of winds?

Different clubs, due to their different launch conditions and different ball flight, will be affected differently. A headwind hurts more than a tailwind helps. In fact, at higher wind speeds, a headwind will hurt more than twice as much as a tailwind helps.

Srixon Ultisoft golf ball

The Srixon UltiSoft is the brand's lowest-compression and softest golf ball ever courtesy of an innovative new core. This makes it an ideal choice for some golfers in the cold as that low compression can help to maximise energy transfer at impact for extra long-game distance.

Bridgestone e12 Contact Golf Ball

This might not be much help but the reason I almost religiously use Pro v1 and x is because I feel they play so much better in the wind. To me, it is the major difference in the tour balls. I am sure there will be those that disagree but I have tried Penta, Callaway Hex, Srixon etc.

mrdb

It would be interesting to try the Gamer. I don't think we get them in Oz. The only TF balls are rocks.

k-troop

I play in Hawaii, where 10-15 MPH is a calm day. I've played just about every tour ball out there, and Penta is hands-down the best (for me) in the wind.

Laws of Woo

My home course is fairly windy most days. Balls I've found to work best are the Srixon Z-Star XV and Callaway Hex Black. Both hold the line pretty decently, I feel I get more out of the Srixon however, and as such play that.

rustyredcab

I won 2nd flight in a tourney this year using a hex chrome and that ball was magical. Great ball just a hair out of my price range.

teamroper60

If "just a hair out" then consider eBay. I bought 2 dozen for under $56 total delivered. There were other deals to be had -- as low as $54 for 2 dozen. These are new in original packages without logos or other odd stuff.

Is golf a mental game?

Golf is just as much of a mental game as it is physical. Adding additional frustrations such as wind can take you out of the game, wavering your confidence and calmness. Can you play into the wind?

While it is difficult to play into the wind, you may find yourself wanting to swing harder to make up for the shorter distance the ball will travel. This leads to overall greater consistency in your playing.
