Ghost Golf was originally a Halloween inspired display set up in the front yard of the private residence of Daryn Coleman who, "tired" of having "one day of glory" a year opened the first iteration in nearby Concord, California in 2009 where it remained in business for almost 10 years, first as a 9-hole course before later expanding to an 18-hole course.

On October 30, 2020, it was reported that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in California, Ghost Golf had shut down in March of that year and attempted to reopen 2 months later in June after given the all-clear by Fresno County which lasted only 4 days before the business was closed again, this time as a result of governor Gavin Newsom 's pandemic response.
