David Fay has been very explicit that the reason the Mid-Am was created was so that people who had jobs could compete in a championship without having to go against golfers who were technically amateurs, but really future pros in training.

That's why I'm working to get into the NC Mid Am. Hard to get into...my handicap is getting closer to being able to sign up for the qualifier. Goal one is getting in...after that, who knows.

Handicap

Last year I pulled up results from the 2018 U.S. Mid-Am and found the names of all 64 players who made the cut. Then I used the Golf Handicap Information Network (GHIN) website to look up their handicaps. I found the average handicap of players who made the cut was +3.1.

Tournament Performance

What range of scores should I be aiming for, and how difficult do the courses I play need to be for an accurate comparison? To find out, I looked up scores and course information from the last five U.S. Mid-Amateurs. My first impression: these courses are more difficult than ones I’m playing.

Now I’ll use Mark Broadie’s Golfmetrics to break down the approximate four stroke difference between my current skill level as a scratch golfer and the elite amateur level I want to achieve.
