That greater energy is partially released in the form of a loud “ping” sound associated with the newer titanium drivers hitting the golf ball. Thin-faced titanium drivers may produce sufficient sound to induce temporary or even permanent cochlear damage - Lead researcher Dr Malcom Buchanan.

How does golf ball technology work?

As of 2012, multi-layer balls contain from one to three mantle layers between the core and the cover. Each mantle helps to reduce the ball's spin when it's hit by a driver. Excessive spin causes the ball to soar higher in the air with a resultant loss of distance.

Why are golf balls dimpled?

Dimples on a golf ball create a thin turbulent boundary layer of air that clings to the ball's surface. This allows the smoothly flowing air to follow the ball's surface a little farther around the back side of the ball, thereby decreasing the size of the wake.

Are golf balls directional?

Set the ball up so that the logo or the writing on the ball (some golf balls even have lines or arrows drawn on them) points towards target 2 – the direction you want the ball to initially travel in. Moving the ball in this way is only possible on the tee or if the course is playing with preferred lies.

Should you choke down on golf clubs?

The first huge benefit of choking down on the golf club is the added control. Since the club instantly becomes shorter, it's easier to control. In general, the more you choke up, the more control you will gain.

What does compress the golf ball mean?

What Is Golf Ball Compression? Compression occurs when the golf ball squishes against the club face when you make contact in your swing. This is how the club propels the ball forward by compressing it at impact and interacting with the core.

Are 30 year old golf clubs still good?

There is no evidence that golf clubs deteriorate over time. Well maintained clubs will last a lifetime. 10+ year old clubs should be checked for better options but clubs less than 5 years old do not need replacing except for wear and tear issues to which wedges and forged irons are most vulnerable.

Do softer golf balls go further?

Do Softer Golf Balls Go Further? As a general rule, soft low compression golf balls will travel further when you hit your driver and irons. With your wedges, soft and firm golf balls should travel the same distance.

Is a whiff a stroke in golf?

If the golfer was trying to hit the ball, then, yes, it's a stroke. However, as noted above, if the golfer missed the ball intentionally, that "whiff" is not a stroke.

Why do I keep missing the golf ball when I swing?

Usually it is caused by golfers who don't commit their body through the shot. During the swing they start to stand up tall before impact which leads to the club coming through above the ball and therefore you miss over the top.

What are golf ball dimples called?

What Are Dimples On A Golf Ball Called? In most cases, golf ball dimples are simply referred to as dimples. However, there are some instances when they will be called indentations or more thoroughly referred to as the golf ball dimples pattern.

Why do I miss the ball when I golf?

The most common one is when you're too close to the ball, whether you start out that way or you fall toward the ball on the downswing. You also could be swinging too much around your body in the backswing, which can make you swing outward too much on the downswing, exposing the hosel to the ball.

Damage From a Single Loud Sound

The most common reason for hearing loss in North America is noise induced hearing loss. This is most commonly associated with loud noises over extended periods of time. A common example would be listening to loud music with earbuds with the volume cranked up past the maximum safe level for several hours.

Common Sound Levels

To put 110 dB in perspective here are a few examples of sounds we know well enough to compare and their approximate decibel levels.

Protecting Your Hearing Without Ruining Your Game

While ear plugs will suppress the loud impulse noises associated with driving a golf ball, most players won’t be happy using them as the distinctive feedback sound of a perfect drive will be impossible to hear properly. There is an alternate solution that will give the requisite feedback a golfer wants to hear.

When was the ping putter invented?

The big ping. Sound first became a focal point for golf club manufacturers back in 1959 with the introduction of the Ping 1A putter. Designed by Karsten Solheim, the 1A had a partially hollowed out blade, which helped enlarge the sweet spot and reduce the number of mishits.

Why do clubs ring louder?

Sounds with certain frequencies will ring louder, even if they maintain a consistent decibel level, simply because the ear is more-sensitive to specific parts of the audible spectrum.

What are the key elements of a golf shot?

The number of variables that can be tracked regarding a golf shot is staggering, but when it comes to acoustics, there are a few key elements: frequency, amplitude (usually referred to as volume), and duration. The relationship between these elements is crucial for getting good sound; if even one is out of whack, ball-strikes might go from a satisfying “clink” to a groan-worthy “clonk” in a hurry.

How much did golf equipment sales in 2015?

Golf equipment sales was a $2.55 billion business in 2015 in the U.S. alone, yet players won’t buy clubs that don’t sound good, even if the sticks could possibly improve their game.

“People will say a putter is ‘hard’ or ‘fast,’ or, on the other hand, ‘soft’ or ‘slow.’ Those are terms that are informed by the acoustics of the interaction,” Russell explains. The frequency and loudness of the impact sound has a correlation with a player’s description of the club’s performance.

I was watching my friend hit some balls who is somewhere in the +1.0 handicap range. I, on the other hand am in the 9-12 range. I notice a very distinct difference in the sound when he hits the ball. I don't hear very much club swoosh at all, a very quiet impact, an then the ball flying away with a ZIIIIING.

Where you hit it on the clubface is the major factor here. Even with a bad swing you can launch the ball nicely by finding the sweet spot. Combine it with the swing of a scratch player and you've got a solid shot. For me it depends how I hit it. If I get it nicely from the inside and hit the ball well it fells like the ball is not there.

They're may be no difference in the way it sounds, it's all about perspective. Then again, he could be playing different clubs and different balls, which certainly would affect the 'crack' made when striking.

I read a quote somewhere of a veteran PGA Tour player commenting on how he knew Tiger was the real deal from watching him as a teen because his shots had so much "integrity". I think the pure and solid sound that you're talking about is a confirmation of the "integrity" of a truly well-struck golf shot. (Along with trajectory, accuracy, etc.)

I tend to think also that quite a bit of visual info contributes to noticing a different sound. What I mean is this: when I watch my really good friends swing, I notice how incredibly smooth and fluid the swing is, which makes the ball speed and zing really jump out at you more.
