50 Words or Less

Piper Golf makes a range of golf balls at prices significantly lower than the big names. Strong, consistent performance at each level. Piper Black and Piper Gold are comparable to the most expensive golf balls.

Introduction

Direct-to-consumer golf balls are not a new thing. In fact, golf feels overloaded with DTC ball companies. So, if you’re Piper Golf, how do you stand out? You start by offering a line up of golf balls that covers every golfer.

The Piper Golf Ball Line Up

So that everyone is on the same page, let me run down the four golf balls that Piper offers. The comparisons come from Piper’s website.

Feel

While each Piper golf ball has a unique feel, there’s a clear divide between the surlyn-covered balls (Green and Blue) and the urethane-covered balls (Black and Gold).

Short Game

The difference between the surlyn and urethane covers is even more stark as we turn toward the short game. On pitch shots and full wedge swings, Piper Green and Piper Blue performed very similarly. Piper Blue spun slightly more, but the difference was less than 5%. Both balls are quite low spin, just as Piper advertises.

Long Game

As we move further from the green, the four Piper balls separate themselves a bit more. With an iron, the 2-piece Green remains the lowest spinning model. For me – a low spin player by nature – it created laughably low spin. 6-iron shots ran out like they were hit by a 3W.

Value

Piper’s golf balls, starting from the least expensive Green to the most expensive Gold, cost $20, $25, $30, and $35 per dozen. Every model is offered at a discount if you buy in bulk, starting at three dozen. If you buy six dozen, you get a full 20% off.

Piper Golf Balls Tech and Design

In my conversations with Piper Golf, it was made clear to me that they aren’t trying to be the best ball in golf, but are quite comfortable being “the second best golf ball you can buy.”

Performance and Feel

I recently had the opportunity to test out each of Piper Golf’s offerings during a round with my buddy Kris McEwen, a co-founder of Second City Golf. We faced shots of all types during our round, which was a mild, breezy day in September.

Overall Impression

Piper Golf balls live up to the expectations the brand sets for themselves when they are comfortable being the “second-best golf ball.” This is a refreshing admission from a new brand who sets realistic expectations for the customer… and themselves.

What is a chipper club?

Using a “chipper” is a good idea for a lot of people. A chipper looks like a putter and you use a putting stroke to hit the ball. You use this club when you are just off the green and sometimes for longer shots where the fairway is clipped tight so the ball can roll.

How much loft does a chipper have?

The chipper usually has about 37 degrees of loft. Many 7 irons have about the same amount of loft. With this loft, I find that the ball likes to travel about 20% in the air and then land on the green before it rolls the remaining 80% to the hole. Again, you can use your putting stroke with a chipper in your hands.

Can you land a chipper off the green?

It’s a good idea to come up with a slide rule for your chipper as well. When you use a chipper and land it off of the green, the ratios are not as predictable as the softer landing. This means it will take some experimentation to gauge just how far in front of the green you need to land it.

Birdies

Picking up a birdie is as simple as... making a birdie. Birdies are the least trashy of all trash, as presumably most birdies are a reasonably well-played hole. Earning a birdie often comes with another piece of trash, namely a polie or a stuffy.

Sandies

Sandies are another common piece of trash, and some of the most satisfying. A sandy is earned by making par or better on a hole, with a sand shot as part of that par. Sandies are most commonly earned by getting up-and-down out of a greenside bunker, but any sand shot will do.

Polies

A polie is earned by making a putt for par or better from outside the radius of the length of the flag stick (7 feet). The only caveat is that you cannot 2-putt for a polie, so no laying your first putt up (not sure why you would do this, but don't even try).

Offies (and Hammers)

Offies, also known as chippies, Seves, Jardinas, and a variety of other names, are earned when you get up-and-down for par. This is the only piece of trash where you must declare, or call it, prior to hitting your chip shot. If the player gets up-and-down after calling an offie, a piece of trash is earned.

Greenies

A greenie, or "prox" (proximity), is essentially a closest-to-the-pin contest on a hole. The player who is on the green and closest to the hole, in regulation, has an opportunity to earn a greenie by making a par or better.

Stuffies

A stuffy is a less common trash varietal, and is essentially the opposite of a polie. It is earned by hitting your approach shot inside the radius length of the flagstick (7 feet) and making the putt for birdie. If the putt is missed, the stuffy is sacrificed.

Barkies

Barkies are earned by making a par or better on a hole where you hit a tree (or bush) along the way. Barkies are only counted if confirmed, audible tree contact is made, so be sure to confirm barkie eligibility with your opponents when you hit a tree.

What makes a chipper different from a putter is its loft ...

How to use a chipper instead of wedges?

Instead of using wedges, you can simply use the chipper like a putter and execute a perfect bump and run to send the ball into the green and towards the hole. Just aim in the direction that you want and send the ball using the chipper.

Why do people use chippers?

A golf chipper is legal to use in any course and even in professional tournaments for as long as it’s not two sided and not fitted with a putter grip. It does make the game easier for more people in ...

How many clubs can a golfer carry?

It is only known to be used off the green or from a little farther. A golfer can only carry 14 clubs during a match and some would rather carry extra woods or wedges instead of a chipper. A chipper has a loft of about 37 degrees and depending on the brand, it is the same loft as that of a 5/6/7 iron.

Is it legal to use golf chippers?

If you feel that you need golf chippers to improve your game, use it by all means. Golf chippers are legal golf clubs and nobody can stop you from using it.

Can a chipper make the short game easy?

A chipper can make the short game very easy and because of that, some golfers frown upon its use. Golf is difficult and they feel that we should master it using the standard clubs. Having played golf for a long time, I certainly disagree.
