Vinegar, soapy water, rubbing alcohol would work. Varsol (paint thinner) work very well but is toxic. The goal is to place the grip on the club. Proper cleaning has lessened the need to change, and when I do, my air compressor works well.

Excellent Solvent
For years are used to use just a basic Canadian tire mineral spirits, but in the last couple years when I got back into golf, I purchased the 1 quart of the solvent and I also got the cap to apply. I’ll never go back to the mineral spirits again.... and I can see how this solvent works much better than the basic mineral spirits.
