Introduction

Sitting atop the mainstream Volkswagen Golf range, the Golf R-Line aims to inject some sporting style into the very liveable non-performance Golf range.

Inside

By far the most divisive element of the new Golf is its almost entirely buttonless interior, with the infotainment screen handling most car controls and settings, with a few shortcut buttons within the cabin.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The new Golf’s big leap forward comes in terms of its infotainment, with a new 10.0-inch centre screen and a comprehensive software overhaul compared to the outgoing model.

Safety and Technology

The 2021 Volkswagen Golf range scored a five-star ANCAP safety result based on 2019 test data (in line with its European introduction). Section scores include a 95 per cent adult occupant protection rating, 89 per cent for child occupant protection, but a lower 76 per cent for vulnerable road user protection (pedestrian and cyclists).

Value for Money

There’s no hiding the fact that the Golf R-Line sits at the higher end of the small-car pricing spectrum, particularly with the optional Sound & Vision pack added. For that you do get a very comprehensively equipped vehicle.

Driving

The new Volkswagen Golf R-Line delivers mixed results on the road – some of which may be the fault of the sportier R-Line package.

Conclusion

The 2021 Volkswagen Golf R-Line’s smart presentation is sure to win over plenty of buyers.

The Most Powerful Golf Ever

Volkswagen has given us good reason to keep our expectations high for the new Golf R model. For one thing, it's the most powerful Golf ever made, with its EA888-series 2.0-liter engine now delivering 315 hp and 280-295 lb-ft.

There's More to the Golf R Than Exiting Corners

Corner exit isn't the only thing the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R does well: There's also its raw speed, the feel of which is enhanced by the six-speed manual. We love the feel of its shifter, though we'd prefer it if the clutch's engagement point didn't feel quite so vague.

Is It Too Perfect?

What is both intriguing and annoying about the 2022 VW Golf R is how firmly it stays on course. Push too hard, and it understeers, with the tail remaining obstinately planted—to the point that it's easier to coax some rotation out of the front-drive GTI than it is the Golf R.

Frustration in the Cabin

Volkswagen does have imperfection well-covered in its interior, though. Once again, we struggled with the new climate and infotainment system. It's not the steep learning curve that's the problem; some of us have gotten used to the interface already in the all-electric ID4 (think smartphone, not car).

Mo' Performance, Mo' Money

When it arrives in dealerships toward the end of this year, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R will sell for $44,640 with a manual transmission and $45,440 with an automatic.

Verdict

Watching the leaves change color never gets old, especially for this Florida boy. And arguably one of the best places to do that in the US is on the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway.

Power That Impresses

The Golf R's turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four lays down power better than any car in the class, delivering 315 horsepower and 295 pound-feet directly to your right foot.

Dynamic Dilution

More disappointingly, the Golf R doesn't have the same dynamic allure as the Civic Type R or Veloster N when the going gets twisty. The progressive variable-ratio steering, as with most setups, adds more or less heft depending on the drive mode, with Race mode being the heaviest setting.

Fine Design, Touchy Tech

Visually, this car is still very much a Golf. Volkswagen does its best Porsche impression by keeping this car’s iconic styling alive for the new generation, while adding features like new light fixtures with a fancy light bar within the grille, a rear spoiler, and a few different wheel options – including the awesome 19-inch shoes pictured here.

Mature Five-Door

At $43,645 to start with a six-speed manual (plus $995 destination fees), the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is the among the priciest hatchback of the bunch – the Civic Type R costs $37,895, the Mini Cooper John Cooper Works GP is $45,750, and the Veloster N asks $32,500.
