Blue GolfR7.5

Hi Guys I have had two Golf R’s a MK7 and now a MK7.5 . Between the two 110,000 kms combined with no issues to note. Sure the MK7 had a cracked starter button, broken seat bolster but that’s about it and fixed by dealer.

Leespo

think you have done very well there, I've done under 20k in 4years and had more issues than you by the sounds of it Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk

Blue GolfR7.5

Thanks for your reply and comment. May you tell me what car and specs you have. Also what problems specifically thanks.

Leespo

lapiz mk7 R estate, basic spec with prets and Garmin nav upgrades. main issues have been DSG selector replacement due to select gear error messages leaking rear doors due to speaker seal issues, resulting in all carpet underlay saturated and needed full lifting and cleaning. I’m not quite on 60,000km but not too far off at 33k miles. Car is a stock mk7 hatch, DSG, DCC, Prets, it’s coming up 5 years old this Sept (owned from new) and the only issue I’ve had is a dud battery which was changed under warranty at 17k miles. Apart from that it’s been good as gold. Serviced annually (haldex oil and filter done).

Blue GolfR7.5

Sorry to hear about that. Again thanks for your reply. How are your leaks now and did you get rid if any musky smells. The gear selector is that deep mechanical in the gearbox mechanism or the hardware connected to the gear shifter? Any other issues thanks

ellixtt

I have a 7R which is on 35k miles (purchased at 20k) and the only major thing I’ve had wrong is a wheel bearing issue caused by a pothole I assume.

Spudgun08

I've been reading with great interest about remaps for the golf r engine and dsg.

I've been wondering same thing but think I'll stick standard for a bit. Like you I've got a fair bit of warranty left and spent more than I should on the car so don't want to be out of pocket for repairs

MattM7R

I've always wondered this too, I know a guy who has an R in my local area but he's not really IT savvy as I've mentioned the forum too him before and he's never been interested, he's running a heavily modified Lapiz Blue 3 door And don't quote me as he may be billybullshi**ing me but he's said his is running 485bhp at the last rolling road day he had with some lads of the Ford RS owners club at Noble Motorsport, how much truth there is in that figure and what he's actually done I don't know but he's had the car a few years now and I see it weekly and always seems to be running smoothly, does anyone know of any R's running 550-600+bhp like you see some of the S3/RS3's running??? I've just fitted s tte 470 to mine as I wanted rid of the stock turbo due to failures. Didn't want to go for 500 plus for the reason of I feel your starting to push the limits of the car. But I know some mates who are running 560hp and have been for a while now and no issues.

Gavras

Not that 100% on VW as I am on BMW, however as with the ZF box used by modern BMW's the key point of fail is their clutch pack rating.

Sean02409

Just from following people on Instagram. Someone was running 560Bhp before the engine started burning oil. And I there's a white one that I think was 600+ before he blew up his engine. Both on stock internals. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

OVERVIEW

Put an R on the bootlid of a car and, with the possible exception of the Suzuki Wagon R, you pretty much know you're going to be in for a good time. The Volkswagen Golf R is no exception.

ENGINE & GEARBOX

The Mk 6 R's EA113 TFSI engine had its share of issues. Unlike the EA133, the EA888 TSi engine did its timing by chain rather than belt. There's no set lifespan for these chains but you should get at least 100,000 miles out of one, and if the chain falls out of the adjustment window a check engine light should come on.

CHASSIS

Tell your disinterested mate that the Golf they're looking at is great fun to drive and they might hoist a quizzical eyebrow. After all, it's only a Golf innit. But underneath its buttoned-down Brooks Brothers look the R really is a hoot. Many believe that the R chassis is more talkative than that of its close relative the Audi S3.

BODYWORK

In the regular hatch shape you could have your R in three or five-door format. Three doors used to be the default choice for a sporty look, but over time VW seems to have visually equalised the two bodystyles and as we've all got fatter these days the ease of entry and added practicality of five doors might edge you in that direction.

INTERIOR

We take the Golf's space, practicality and quality for granted these days, and things have improved with every new iteration. The R's ambience is on the sober side of exciting, but the high quality of Golf kit meant that you got extra class in the R simply by virtue of having more of it.

PH VERDICT

Even a leggy Mk 4 R32 will cost you at least £7,000 nowadays, and good ones go well into five figures. Mk 6 Golf Rs aren't cheap either at £11,000-£13,000 for middle-of-the-road cars and £18,000-plus for low-milers, their values having been kept buoyant by relative rarity - the Mk 6 R production line didn't run for much more than a couple of years.
